Just to clarify between "Reader" and "Player".

A reader is the physical hardware that gets input from the media, and passes it along.

A player is an application that uses the passed-along media from a reader, and presents it in a certain way.
Alternately, a player can be considered reader+application.

    ********************

Now, ANY Blu-ray reader or burner can be used with 3D or 2D.

It's the player application/hardware (and subsequent buss and display hardware) that make all the difference about whether one can watch in 3D or not.

Items like the Sony BC series are BD READERS.

From that point on you would need a 3D BD -capable playback software application. There are only 3 right now: PowerDVD, WinDVD, and TMT. Then, you have to be able to SEE it in 3D, and that depends on the native display of your laptop (probably NOT likely, otherwise you would have told us), or an external display. But then you have to have a means to send the 3D to the display.

The preferred consumer electronics method is to use v1.4a-compliant HDMI. Does your laptop have that? If not, can you get an adapter card/slot/device that can provide that? If not then, you're probably stuck with watching in Anaglyph (or using a completely different system for playback) or possibly some form of Frame-Sequential (if your display is quick enough).

  3. Thanks Scott, it is a very clear explanation, as you suppose I want to use my notebook as a 3D BD player and send the movie via HDMI out to my 3d TV.

    3D playback requires the following.
    1) A fast enough CPU. Your laptop MAY be OK here, depending on how recent and expensive it is.
    2) A GPU that supports 3D playback. Almost certainly yours will NOT be sufficient.
    3) Some kind of monitor that also supports 3D playback. Never heard of a laptop with one of those.

Depending on #1 and #2 you MIGHT be able to send it the output to a 3D TV, but I doubt it. It's unlikely that your laptop will be powerful enough. You can look here for a list of requirements.

In reality it would be almost impossible to meet the requirements without having a tower PC of some kind.
