  1. I've owned a Sony DRU-540A for about three months and it's always worked great with XP SP1 and Nero. I decided to format my computer last weekend and reinstalled using XP SP2. Everything installed perfectly. However, my Sony DRU-540A doesn't appear to want to burn any discs (CDR or DVDR) despite the fact that it can read both formats perfectly. I ran DiscCheck, and it shows that my CD-R Write Speed is 0x and DVD+R Write Speed is 0x. Also, I tried upgrading the Firmware from 1.0a to 1.0b but this didn't make a different. I've checked Google and the forums and haven't found anyone that is having a similar problem. Any suggestions what I should try next to get my burner working again? I want to make formatting and installing XP SP1 as my last resort.

  2. I am having a similar problem under XP SP2.

    drive = Sony DRU-500ax
    Firmware = 2.0h

    Anytime I would try to burn data to a DVD it would fail in Nero. I've had XP2 for 3 or 4 weeks but prior to today I'd never burned a data DVD nor used Nero to burn any video DVDs. I've been using TMPGEnc's products for DVD authoring and burning without problems on XP2 so far.

    I started with Nero v6.3.1.25 - the most up-to-date version that I know of. It wouldn't burn data to a blank DVD at 4x. I didn't try burning at a slower speed because the media is 4x and should work at 4x - just like it does when I burn using other software on my system.

    I upgraded the 500AX's firmware to 2.1a - prior to this the windows device manager and Nero's info tool displayed this drive as being in PIO mode only even though 'use DMA if available' was selected. After the 2.1a firmware upgrade it's listed as DMA on, and that's the only step forward I've made.

    Nero 63125 still wouldn't burn a data DVD at 4x. I uninstalled and downgraded Nero to v6.3.0.2 hoping that would change something. I don't think it did. I still can't burn a data DVD using Nero at 4x on 4x media. I can burn at 2.4x, but I'm really not happy as there's a big difference between 20+minutes per disc and 12 minutes per disc when you want to burn off about 40GB worth of stuff to free up space on a hard drive for future projects. I'm not burning from ISO images but I think I may try that... make an ISO from my files using Alcohol or something and then burn using BlindWrite... at 4x. I have multiple hard drives and it doesn't take much more than a minute for me to make an ISO image if I manage the data right.

    I don't know if this helps anyone - but maybe at least try burning at a slower speed first before changing software and firmware. All my upgrading and downgrading were for nothing apparently and I'll just have to wait and see if Ahead can fix Nero in a later release... since other apps will burn to DVD at full speed on my system I can't blame this on SP2 IMO.

    I even tried a laser cleaning disc for cryin out loud :/ Some errors from my Nero logs - #3 is copied from the 2.4x successful burn log in the same area where the errors are in the other logs. #1=Nero63125@4x, #2=Nero6302@4x, #3=Nero6302@2.4x.

    I also ran Nero CD-DVD Speed on the disc I burned. See attached image... looks good to me.
