you can use dvd2svcd or diko(no menus though). dvd2svcd guide
    https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=603&howtoselect=4;10#603

if you want menus you can first convert to dvd mpeg and then author with a tool that supports switchable subs like dvd-lab pro, dvdauthorgui

Since you know how to make a DVD out of an avi, I guess you know how to author. You need an authoring program that supports subitles though, like DVDLab Pro,DVDMaestro or Sonic Scenarist and from there you need to find a program to convert from .srt to a format supported by your authoring software i.e. conversor (subripper-->scenarist converter), or sub2stl for maestro, or MaestroSBT and subtitle workshop.

You said that you want to put the sub right on the DVD.
Since it is only 1 sub, no need to be selectable, you do not need any dvd authoring program.
First you have to read and follow this:
    https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?link=262
But what works best for me, is using NeroVision Express instead of TMPGENC.
So, follow the instructions in the guide to adjust and enable subtitles within FFDShow.
After that, open NeroVision Express, the wizzard opens, choose Make a DVD, add in your avi, and just click few nexts. Preview, convert and burn.
I have tried many other options, but this is the simplest and the best way to make a DVD with one subtitle, when you source is AVI movie with one .srt or .sub.
There are some cool options in both FFDShow and NeroVision Express, which I will describe in new guide when I find enough time for it, but most of them you should discover yourself if you are interested to experiment a bit.

Permanent subtitles on a DVD? For me it would be like moving years back, when VHS was the only way to capture and watch video and subtitles were permanently stuck on the picture. Now with digital videos, you can have selectable subtitles, which you can always turn on, off, or remove completely when you backup your film, but with selectable subs, there's no turning back. You can't erase them, they will always be there.

Well you sort of can. You can use virtualdubmpeg2 and delogo to remove them. It's not perfect though and would leave a watery afterimage afterwards.

But, selectable subtitles would be much better.

Believe m8, I'd rather leave the subs as they are than delogo. What would be the point anyway, you can still see that there were subtitles there. At least we agree on something. Selectable subs are the best

What's the point to have selectable subtitles, when you have just one subtitle to add to a DVD ?

Like someone said, permanent subs are a vague memory from the VCD era, and totally un-cool!
(Not to mention that it's easier (at least not harder)to create real DVD subs than permanent subs.)

I agree with you Mats, but a Newbie would encounter a lot of troubles in adding a true DVD subs to his project.
That's why I advised to go the easy way. Remember that the source is an AVI and .srt.
Besides, I haven't had good final results with .srt to .sup conversion, yet.
Please, tell us what programs do you use for adding new subtitles to a DVD?
    Thanks
