Should it be done?
I usually don't use my cpu at all while I encode, transcode, or write to dvd...however, it would be nice to use my cpu and get other files ready while my cpu is working...Could this affect the final DVD? I use XP and my cpu profile is in my user profile. Anyone have any problems doing multiple things on their cpu?

WTF
You don't have a P4 dedicated only for DVD backups?
Your CPU is powerful enough to run other tasks while backing up DVDs.The only thing I would not do is burning CDs or DVDs.

Doing other things while encoding may slow the process down a bit as encoding is pretty CPU intensive. It will depend on how intensive your other tasks are though. Surfing etc. is not a problem, gaming might be little difficult.
