  1. Twice now I've downloaded .avi files that had 'pdtv' in their names and I can't play them. Audio is fine but the picture is standing still. Both Avicodec and gspot tell me that the files are okay (Xvid Mpeg-4 which I do have installed) but even after using DivFix I still can't play the files or convert them with Tmpgenc in order to burn them.

    Any ideas?

  3. Thanks for your reply, maurik, but I'm pretty certain that the files I have are not flukes, so the problem persists for me.

  4. pdtv is just short for "pure digital tv" probably taken from an ATSC signal the 4:3 SD broadcast; the video is still basically either an xvid/divx file probably done incorrectly since you can't play it. I had a couple files that wouldn't play correctly using xbmc or media player classic. Threw them in http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and they played without a hitch. I think vlc uses ffdshow to decode divx/xvid. VLC is self cotained so if it doesn't work for your files then just remove.

  5. Thank you, deadpac, I'll try that for playing the files. This wouldn't solve my problem with converting the files with Tmpgenc though, would it?

Probably not for that I would probably frameserve to TMPGenc either through Virtual Dub or Avisynth.

Okay, thanks! As soon as I've found out what "framserve through Virtual Dub means I'll do it.

  8. You obviously went STRAIGHT to the forum without bothering to read the wealth of information on your left ....

    Otherwise you would have seen...

    https://www.videohelp.com/glossary?F#Frameserve

and then went on to look for these well written articles on

    How to Frameserve

Oh and guess what this should be in the N...E...W...B...I...E forum

Lose the attitued if you eve expect to get any help from the people who actually bothered to look up, read, understand, and try before posting.

  9. Deadpac, first of all I'm sorry for offending you, although I really don't understand how I managed to do that!

I have indeed read a lot of the stuff on my left before posting here otherwise I wouldn't have been able to comment on the results of gspot and avicodec. I also wouldn't have a clue what tmpgenc is if I hadn't read it here.

Secondly, my original question was about playing the files which is why I opened a thread in this forum. I also didn't want to clutter up the newbie thread but instead tried to address my question more specifically. If that isn't the way things are done on this forum I'll make sure to remember it in future. If I ever dare post a question again.

Last but not least my comment about frameserving was meant in all seriousness; I wanted to follow your advice by reading up on frameserving in the wealth of information on my left. Understanding how you interpreted this into me having an attitude is beyond me.

Again, sorry for bothering you; it certainly won't happen again!
