  1. According to the DVD players list on this site (and on every other site I've checked) the JVC XV-N 33 SL will pretty much take whatever you throw at it. Still I’m having problems getting mine to accept anything that I feed it burned on my Mac. Why?

Example: I rip one of my DVD’s from my collection using DVD-Backup. Remove excessive audio and subtitle tracks (Urdu, Arabic, Croatian and such) using DVD2one. And Voila. I have done this before and played it on a “No brand” DVD player fine.

Why, oh why does my beautiful JVC not like my DVD+/-R ????

P.S. I usually “drag and drop” the data on to the DVD and burn it by dropping it on the Trash/Burn icon.

    PLZ HELP. I’m desperate

    Thanx a bundle in advance.

    El Cris.

You have to burn the DVD in UDF format.

Get DVDImager and drop the VIDEO_TS folder you want to burn on its icon. It will create an image. Now open Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities), click on the "burn" icon, select the image and burn it.

Also, media brand is important for set-top player compatibility. If you find that they still don't play, I'd recommend using Ritek/RiData DVD-R media, as I've found them to be most compatible. If you want the absolute maximum compatibility, and money is no object, Taiyo Yuden media are supposed to be the nec plus ultra.

also make a test burning at LOW speed, 1x or 2 x that decreases the amount of burning errors and improves compatibility

Maxell and TDK DVD-R are also very good and reliable but you have to check: made in Japan

I find it hard to believe that your previous burns were playing on "no brand" dvd players assuming you were using the finder burn via trash can option.

I would suggest looking into getting toast titanium, but the work around with dvd_imager does work

  7. Dude. cross my heart hope to die. That "no brand" machine took pretty much anything!!!!

On a different note I have just bought a fresh pack of Fuji DVD-R and Im not leaving this seat until my JVC eats them! And that's that.

BTW I did try it with toast titanium as well before and still no good.

    Thanx for all yours reply.

  9. Fantastic! It worked. Thnx y'all!
Now one final question. Do I have to run it through DVD_imager always?
Or is it enough if I just burn the DVD on Toast Titanium?

    /C.

You can burn it using Toast without the need for DVDImager.

If you have the latest version (6.0.7) click on the Video tab and select "DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS" on the drawer (Advanced).

If you have any other version of Toast 6 you have to choose the Data tab and select "DVD-ROM (UDF)".

No-name players seem to have less strict idea of disc-specs. Sometimes good thing, but at the end, even empty discs will not have features (optical and mechanical) they are supposed to have.

Branded players have also sometimes their own preferred disks
My Samsung SV-DVD1E doesn't like MXLG02-disks, dvd-r. It has always artefacts, jerky motion and problems with startmenu. Exactly same movie burned on DVD+R(W) disk with same burner (Nec ND-2500), it works like commercial product. I can honestly recommend Fuji +R and +RW disks, as well as Philips and Sony +R and +RW (those 4x).

Most problems seem to be currently media related, cheap and not-so-good media being sold everywhere. Every authoring/burning program is currently ready enough to yield good results.

Note that Fuji, Phillips and Sony are media distributors, not manufacturers, so quality with them will vary. That's why I use Ritek/RiData media, since they're a manufacturer, and so the quality is consistently excellent. If you want the best quality media, Taiyo Yuden is also a manufacturer, and make consistent top-of-the-line media.

Haven't seen Ritek or Taiyo Yuden here in Finland. Maybe Rimax is same as Ritek, Rimax can be bought here. Haven't bought "warehouse"-branded disks, so don't know their mediacodes. They are likely to change vendor often.

Maybe Fuji, Sony etc also use different vendors in different areas, eg. "4x Fuji +R" sold in USA is different than "4x Fuji +R" sold in Scandinavia? Anybody knows?

  15. I have a JVC XV-N40 DVD player and it works fine with the DVD-R media I put in it. I've never tried +R media...

That's entirely possible. It's also possible that the 4x Fuji +R you buy today won't be the same 4x Fuji +R you bought last week, and won't work on the same players.
