Stand alone AC3 files

Have just started using Tmpgenc 3XP with the built in AC3 encoder/decoder and have hit a bit of a problem.
I download US TV programs author them to DVD to send to my son, so far with no problems at all, however there are some of these TV shows that I watch myself. For these after I convert I burn to CDRW with Nero 6. No problem with these either until I started using 3XP and encoded the audio as AC3. Now when I burn the converted mpegs to a CDRW they have no audio when I play them on my stand alone DVD player. I think the problem is with Nero as when I load the file it appears to load twice. I installed the Nero AC3 plugin but it has had no effect.
Anyone any ideas?
