  1. I have a 2 hour 700 meg xvid avi movie that I want to convert to SVCD but the video quality is not that great.
Is there any way of making the quality better or would just converting it to SVCD do it.

    Thanks

You can't make it any better, if you do it right then the quality will stay the same and not get any worse.

  3. Do you mean the quality of the original AVI files isn't that great, or the quality after conversion to SVCD isn't that great?

  4. hi there...

ya' can't fit that much video on a compliant SVCD disc. you'll have to cut your vid into three parts either before or after conversion to SVCD format (mpeg2).

converting to SVCD will not make your video look better.. more likely it'll look worse (more or less on what you use and how you encode it).

you can fix some issues using a filter or a combination of filters in virtualdub or premiere. unless you know what you're doing you'll likely make your video look worse.

video looks somewhat better on a TV as compared to a computer monitor so you might be pleasantly surprised by your results in the end.

2 parts, 2-pass VBR with an average bitrate of 1600 or so and it won't be too bad.

You can never get higher quality than the source - the best to hope for is "same as source". Really bad sources (noisy VHS captures) might benefit from filtering, but in general, as good as the source is what to pray for.

  8. Hi peter p,

You have to encode the AVI file to a compliant SVCD mpeg file first. The resulting mpeg file will be larger in size than your AVI file so it may fit in 2/3 disks depending on the encoding bitrate. I dont know what encoder you are using. But I use TMPGEnc & Nero Vision Express 3. To fit into 2 disks you have to keep the video bitrat=1550Kb/s and audio bitrate=224Kb/s. To fit into 3 disks you can increase the video bitrate to 2450 kb/s keeping the audio bitrate same. Obvioulsy the higher video bitrate will result in better picture quality.

  9. I'm using cce with dvd2svcd and in the bitrate section I have the minutes set to 100 - 125 on 3 800 meg cd's (my avi is 117 minutes). The end result is 3 bin files, 2 are 800 megs and the 3rd one is 100 megs.
I was hoping that dvd2svcd would split it equally on 3 cd's.

  10. peter p,

DVD2SVCD splits the resulting bin file using "best fit" strategy.

The first 2 files are equal in size to that will "best fit" in the disk you have configured i.e. 800 MB. After that the "remaining" portion of the file will go into the last disk (3rd in your case).

  11. I installed D2Sroba and it took care of everything. It analyzes the avi and determines how many cd's to use for the size, I tried it with a 1 hour and 46 minute movie (1.4 gigs) and it put it on 3 equal cd's.
