  1. Ok I do alot of downloading clips off the net..I try to stick to DVD rips when I can find them. My problem is (as with probably a bunch of newbies) how do you get rid of them blocks. Ive tried everything that Ive read and Im impressed with the quality, but about 3/4 of the movies have them blocks some where in the picture. I use TMPEGnc
here are my normal settings they change a liitle depending on the movie but I keep to them closely......

    stream type..MPEG 2
    size: 480x480
    Aspect ratio: 4:3 display
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Rate Control Mode: Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)(max: 2600 min: 300)
    VBV buffer size: 112
    Profile&Level: MP@ML
    Video Format: NTSC
    Encode Mode: non-interlace
    YUV format: 4:2:0
    DC Precision: 10 bits
Motion search: motion est. search(fast)& Normal
    -----------
In the Advance Tab I make the required changes and only use filters if I have to..(majority of the time)
    -----------
In GOP I really dont fool around with...Except how do you utilize the force picture setting?..Cant really find out much about that.
    ------------
Quantize Matrix: I use MPEG standard or default..I use floating point if needed..And soften Block noise doesnt do the trick, but I still use it but mostly at the default setting.(35) And I dont use no motion search.
    ------------
    Audio: I use Standard settings
    ------------
System: MPEG 2 Super Video CD (VBR)

Like Ive said I usually get clips from the net and I try to get HQ. But even some DVD rips I get still have blocks. The clips I get are usually AVI & MPEG never tried asf or any other format.Im not asking for a total solution just a few tricks of the trade that experts use. And one more question..Ive notice VirtualDub has a lot more filters..Could I add certain filters to the movie in VirtualDub before I encoded with TMPEGnc? Im not sure Im asking that right, but would this help at all?

    Thanks for your time....

    What is your bitrate?
Amyways your honest best bet is to do a xsvcd with a downloaded anything. you can still use your normal setings just change your resolution to 352 x 480 , or 352 x 240.

If you do this it will squeeze more bts into a littler resolution area making the quality look better.

I do recomend the 352x480 to try first and if it still creates blocks try the next one.
