I am going to build a new computer next summer, and have a question about Tv-Tuners. I like playing games. i am looking at the Radeon All-In-Wonder 8500DV and the WinTvPVR. Is it better to get the AIW or get the WinTv PVR and a Geforce 3 card? Good gaming performance is important and I have been reading that both tuner cards do Tivo-like fuctions. Which combo is better. The AIW runs on the AGP and WinTv PVR on PCI. Any info or links to reviews or comparisons will be greatly appreciated.

    bigbadbob,

Well, there's always a chance w/ problems w/ DirectX drivers.

Some games will want Driver X version, while others might
    want this driver X version.
Then, there's your ATI CARD. It's wants this Driver X version
or it's own on the CD, or maybe an newer one on there support
site for the latest Driver X (directX)
And then some, maybe with the supplied Capture software, or
with 3rd party Capture software, etc, etc.

This just my opinion, but better off with TWO pc's. That is,
IF, and IF you are serious about Capturing AND Gaming!
So, unless you do more research on this, maybe someone
else has had better experience here, can post, you should
continue researching this further - just to be sure you know
    what headackes lie ahead!

Well i meant to say that i dont play very strenuous games. Racing games, some shooters thats about it. Also i only run my games at 800x600, i dont like 1020x740 or whatever. I dont play multiplayer. Gaming is not a major part, i dont spen very much time playing games.

nVidia makes their own capture card called nvidia Personal Cinema which comes with GeForce cards if you get the right bundle. I heard that you cannot get this capture card without getting a GF card, so if you're going with a GeForce, then get the bundle that comes with nVidia's Personal Cinema, which should not be as annoying since the same people make the drivers for both devices and they're meant to work together.

Hi BigBadBob about your q Radeon All-In-Wonder 8500DV vs the WinTV-PVR, Well the WinTV-PVR wins hand down beening it has Real Hardware support for MPEG2 where the Radeon All-In-Wonder 8500DV is base on Ligos SoftCodec beisde by time you ready to buy sometime there should be some new NextGen card out so I wouldn't really worry about it rigth now if I was you unless you want something rigth now.
TIbrO nVidia Personal Cinema suck beside it using InterVideo WinDVR.

    BigBadBob,

I'm gonna put it to like this. . .

GET the WinTV PVR (USB or PCI, verison @ ~$199)

A - if you wanna do DVD movie copies, this device will do it
Flawless!! . . .and w/ great quality!! (speaking from my USB experience)

B - if you wanna do satalete captures, PVR again. But, not as
good as DVD, but still good - after all, it's a hardware MPEG1/2 chip.

C - go with you first option - ATI and figure it all out for yourslef, he, he...

Installation can be easy or hard, for both cards, but once you get
past that hurdle, you're in business. Get a system that works for you,
and you're in bigger business! . . .talking about the MPEG editing and
    stuff.
Bare in mind, there are ups and downs to MPEG and AVI editing.
But, again, once you've past the hurdle, you're in business.

I like the PVR for it's quick DVD backups, and also, when I'm lazy or
just want to see what quality I'd get out of a tv show or special movie,
. . .Star Wars is on right now. . .He, he, .....
    .
    .
May the force be with you!!! he, he.. .. . .

PS: if you're good, I'll post a sample clip of Star Wars
at my web site Here, he, he. . .

** as promised... capture came out real good - may want to check it out - other samples as well
    and burn to CD.

  9. If you get an internal capture card...absolutely positively stay on top of the latest drivers (not that you shouldn't for an external version). When I got my WinTV Go card a year ago, I couldn't get it to work until I got the latest drivers for it. I don't have that card anymore since it didn't encode the audio in stereo, but this is a good example on why you should get the latest drivers. Latest DirectX works best (and sometimes requires) that you do so...you have been warned
