OK, I have started the undaunting task of trying to transfer years of VHS tapes to DVD. I was able to get a couple of good captures when I first started, but now I can't get anything captured correctly.
System specs (pretty decent, in my opinion)
-P4, 2.8
-1 GB RAM
-80 GB system drive
-120 GB data drive
-250 GB SATA drive just for video stuff
-Sound Blaster Live
-XP Pro, SP2 [no viruses or spyware]
-ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 XT
-ADS DVD Xpress
Some of the problems: (I end-task on all unecessary programs and only use the capturing program)
[ATI]
-Can't install MMC 9.02. When I run the setup, the Install Shield just hangs... Through trial and error, I found that if I end-task on IDriver.exe, then Install Shield reports "1628: Failed to complete installation." [The DAO/MDAC and DVD Decoder portions installed correctly]
-w/ MMC 8.8 (what came on the CD in the box): The picture gets jumpy for about 2-5 seconds every 10-30 seconds.
[ADS]
-Using CapWiz 3.5: Anything captured from the VCR has severe audio problems - while captured, when replayed from the MPEG, and when replayed from a DVD created from the MPEG. It kind of sounds like a popping noise, almost like the audio is too loud. There is no setting to adjust the volume of the audio in.
-The top 2% of the screen is garbled.
UGGG. I feel like I spent waaay too much money on this already - I just want to get SOMETHING working! Any help would be appreciated!

I've got the same card, try using mmc 9.0.1. It was the only one I got to work.

Particularly, step 2. After I did step 2 my system became much more stable. -
Install 8.7, it's the most stable one.

Thanks guys...
I have followed the steps in the rage3d.com message to completely rid my system of ATI and started over.
9.02/9.01 still would not install - following the steps given by ATI (MDAC/DAO first). I was able to install 8.7.
I can capture from TV and it looks and sounds great. When I try to capture from the S-Video input from a VCR, the picture is jumpy, and the sound is very much overblown. The same tape plays fine on a TV.
So, it's got to be either some settings in the MMC, or the purple dongle thingy. Any more ideas? -
*bump*
Any more ideas? I've got a stack of VHS tapes that are piled up in my office waiting to be transferred! -
Regards the ADS DvdExpress
There is a ADS forum at http://p211.ezboard.com/fpyro1394frm8
The post I have read about "poping" noise talk about it occuring at edit points or stop/start on a vhs tape
The above forum are all ADS product users and may be able to provide more help with that device.
