  1. I need to shrink an 85mb large AVI-file (that only need to be 3-4 mb large)

however, I'm having a trouble to find any good program that can do this and not lose any quality of the file. (or very little)

I've tried the VirtualDub, but I only got an error saying it couldn't.
the shrinking from Dr. Divx just made the file... weird..

anyone have any tips on what program I can use?

You will not find any program that will be able to do this. You simply cannot make a video 5% of it's original size and keep any sort of quality.

  3. ok, then.. any good program that I can convert to another format that doesn't reduce the quality?

  4. Converting by it's very nature causes you to loose quality.

  5. The best you can do is one of the newer MPEG4 variants - DivX, WMA9, etc. You'll need to decide whether it looks better reducing the resolution to 50% or 25% before skooshing that much or not.

    Hello,

You could try things like using the pocket video setting, use 352x240 resolution, and a bitrate of 400. You MIGHT get it watchable and small enough for your purposes. The bitrate is the main factor in filesize.

Here is a list of videobitrate calculators:
