hey i have 88 minutes i wish to put on one cd-r - obviously with a bitrate of 1150 it's too big so i came here and read up and went and converted it to 1050 kbps thinking this would solve all my problems but burning with nero it doesn't at all - the file size appears lower but when i put it in nero it's bigger than the first file!

the first file i ran through tmpgenc mpeg tools multiplex as nero said it was out of standard - this made the file compatable, but when i put in the lower bitrate file and multiplex it - the files size bloats to the same as the higher bitrate

i can't win either way - if i leave it alone nero doesn't like it and the file appears bigger and if i run it thorugh the multiplexer to make it a proper vcd file it bloats the file size and i can't fit any more video onto my disc.

    what am i to do?

cheers for reading guys, hope someone can give me a clue!

  2. Encode with the lower bitrate as you have done, and when Nero says it is non-compliant, simply tick the little box that says 'allow non-compliant video' (or something like that!) and Nero will burn it quite happily.

If all you have done is lowered the bitrate and it is otherwise VCD compliant it will almost certainly play perfectly.

but when i load it into nero and click the box that says accept it anyway (or whatever) it takes up more space than before - honestly! i don't understand it.

i forgot to mention that it's 21 small files that total up to 88 minutes.

also is there any reason why the file size bloats when i multiplex it to make it a proper vcd file?

That one I might be able to answer!

When you multiplex in TmpGenc, in the drop down at the top of the dialog box, make sure you select MPEG-1 Video-CD (non standard). If you select just MPEG-1 Video-CD, it will automatically pad the bitrate.

There was an older version of TmpGenc that had a bug that would cause padding to be inserted even when you selcted non-standard too. I can' remember exactly which version it was though, sorry

As for Nero, I have never seen the problem you are describing, so can't help with that, again, sorry

secondly, that little bit of info about tmpgenc is exactly what i'm after i reckon - i'll give it a go now and tell you my results!

    cheers!

well, i tried it in non standard and it's kept the file size down so that's a bonus - off one of the 43.3mb files i have now saved 3.3mb of space, so i'm encoding at 1050 so am now trying at 1100 kbps - the higher the bitrate the nicer it'll look afterall.

i'll try burning in nero later and see if it works - the only other thing i need to know now is why nero 5 burns vcd's in minutes and not in mb's? cos minutes are no good when trying to get more than 80 onto a cd - it causes problems. what i mean is in earlier neros when i add files they mountup in minutes and not by file size - obviously the running time doens't change with these files but i can now get the file size down, i have nero 6 on my pc and the files when put in are mounted up in mb's so i guess this means you cna get more minutes for your data!

if that makes any sense at all!
