The latest firmware from Benq that enable the DL in DW822A is really ... really bandage job. It's call a "swith" instead of an upgrade ! What a rib-off ! The drive can only have one mode... i.e. either DL or non-DL. It can be switched with the B3JCX. I won't bother to do the "upgrade."

Time to shop for a real DL burner !

why when the media is still so high (> $10 I think), and the burn process so problematic? two D-5s only cost about a buck total. Running out of storage space for dvdrs, are we? but if you're doing it for professional reasons (client wants only one disc) you may have a reason to get one since you can pass the cost onto him/her.

Where did you even find the firmware? I can't find anything other than B3IC; at least not on the U.S. site.

Thanks! I also just found the latest firmware on BenQ's Australian site.

However, based upon pchan's post, I don't think I'm going to attempt the "upgrade" at this time. I mean, switching firmware to go from DL to SL (and vice versa) isn't really an acceptable solution, IMHO.

It looks like this is only temporary according to BenQ's U.S. web site. They just posted the new firmware and the following statement:

A single firmware version integrating DVD+R Double Layer, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW is still currently under development, and will be made available at a later date. Until such time as the single firmware solution is released, we hope that the currently available “switch tool” meets all your requirements and does not prove too inconvenient to use.

    @ tag,

BenQ did not keep their commitment of DL firmware upgrade by September 30th, 2004 . That's what pissed me off.

Why is nobody ever happy that we even have this type of technology?

I think I won't be rushing out to buy a DL burner just yet. Seems they were in too much of a hurry to get it marketed. maybe the DVD Forum was wise in waiting ....get the kinks out first

  10. I think you can do SL + and dual layer in the same firmware (BJCX) and then you have to switch if you do SL -.

you obviously have never worked for a company that writes software, everything takes time and the dates are normall set by some over zelus pencil neck sales managers or directors( ), then said ( ) director tells the poor coding bods who then have a nervious breakdown (putting project back further)
Well thats my experience anyway - regardless of the product be it a fruit machine or dvdr its all the same - shame some poeple aren't in touch with reality (sales ppl I mean)

At least Benny boy gave you somthing - you want to try waiting for Optorite updates
