: I am using pinnacle 9 software and capturing DV footage after editing the home movie I tend to use a lot of rolling titles and effects plus added jpeg photos which makes the rendered movie around 4 gigs. Now when I burn or write using Nero 5.5 on my xp system using a plextor dvd writer. Nero then states as the file is more than 2gigs I have to burn as a UDF ( Universal Data file ). The dvd disc works fine on my two computers with Samsung DVD players. But is terrible to load on three models of stand a lone dvd players all of which state dvd-r compatible. Which I have already found is better than dvd+r. 50% the dvds work great but only after waiting up to a minute and only on the 4th or 5th attempt, otherwise the disc is just ejected. Is the UDF file hard for the laser to read as it seems to be working hard ie making sounds. This is the same for the Bush and Goodmans. ? Why can't I burn more than 2 gigs anyway as a video file when a dvd can hold around 4.3 gigs. There appears to no ajustment for this in Nero. Also there are different versions of UDF files ie 1 up to 2. What do I need to do so that dvds load load and more quickly . I am not sure what happens to the mpeg2 windows media files and how they become another called UDF files on the burnt DVD. It is annoying thats relatives cant see my work unless they have a computer or have trouble loading as I have to tell then to keep loading which 50% of time works fine. I am using dvd-r ritek go4 printable dvd's and Ritek silver pritable dvd's. Many thanks for any help

PINNACLE DVD HOME MOVIES BURNING ISSUES

Your MPEG2 needs to be authored.
A "how to" - http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/53/59/
tools - https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=2#2
Some DVD authoring specify 'elementry' streams (seperate Audio/Video)
DVDLab & TMPGEnc DVD Author are two most common used DVD authoring tools.
UDF allows for files over 2Gb to be put on a disk. My standalone DVD player will only read the first 2Gb of a 'raw' 4Gb mpeg2 before stopping. Others may simply 'choke' and not play straight mpegs.
A authored DVD is typically structured in 1 Gb VOB files (although DVDLab does some wierdness and makes them a little smaller)\

Thanks very much all this is new to me. I always thought pinnacle software did the authoring when the dv video is rendered. So I assume I need more software before I burn. Will I lose quality ?

Do yourself a favour and confuse your mind with the guides (to the left)
A simplified process -
1. capture / transfer video (DV)
2. edit & add tranditions
3. export ie: MPEG2
4. import into DVD author program ( and, for example, make chapter points)
5. export as a structured DVD
6. burn to DVD
You will not loose quality, DVD authoring simply takes your 'raw' mpeg and puts it into a format / structure that your DVD player understands.
All you need is a DVD authoring application. If you are just beginning, then either one of the two I mentioned above will suit you.

Agreed. You need to read up on it some more in the guides section.
And ROB5 - In the future, turn off your caps lock for the topic title. You don't need to shout hereThanks.

In the UK schools teach that headings, or titles should be in Capitals and it's not rude. I appreciate it might be in new mexico. Thanks for help

Thanks Holistic your list is very helpful. I can't hear you though and my speakers are on as well. What I don't understand is that after paying for pinnacle 9 software which allows burning a movie straight to DVD. Why they did not include the authoring for the the video to work properly all the time. rob
