    Hello,

I'm sure you've heard all the news about Mt St Helens in Washington state. There are hundreds of tourists around it waiting for it to blow. I wouldn't be there. Why trust your life to the judgement of scientists???? I mean they can't predict Hurricanes with 100% accuracy why would you trust them on the impact zone of a volcanic explosion? There still unpredictable. Just because they predict it won't equal the 1980 blast doesn't mean it can't be really bad. It just seems like a lot them are thrill seekers. And what are they doing wasting vacation time staring at a mountain?????

Just ranting I guess. I wouldn't risk my life on it. I'll catch it on tv!

At least your relatives would have a cool way to tell people how you died.

I for one would LOVE to be in a big open field somewhere in an earthquake. Just to experience that AWESOME power that Mother Nature can unleash.
A volcano?....not sure what my "safe distance" would be but I would love to see, feel and hear that as well.
Hurricanes last too long. THOSE are impressive enough to me from "TV distance"....

I can tell you what my safe distance is from a volcano....how about Ohio

True it would be interesting, and would be pretty cool to see...I think...but not interesting enough to die over.

Be your luck heck54, the earthquake would create a giant sink hole right under you.

For me, the safest place to be when Mother Nature gets pissed off, is somewhere else

Hmmm, interestin you posted this topic as I was thinking the same thing. There was a lot of people that died the last time because they were too close. Of course that was a massive explosion but I still fail to see how they can accuratley judge what's going to happen even now. What if the entire moutian goes this time.... I'm sure they can make a good guess, it would be very interesting to witness but I think I'll watch it on TV.

    Hello,

Exactly my point! I mean sure science has come a far way, but would you put your life on the line because of it????

That's why I'll stay away from obvious dangers like that.

  20. I'm pretty sure they're more than far enough away to at least be able to get away in case of a really large eruption. They're a lot further than people were during the 1980 event.

Way up at the top of my list of things to see before I die is a volcanic eruption, like Mt. Aetna, with the lava spewing out at night. For some reason that's always fascinated me....

That reminds me of Jurassic Park 3 when Billy tells Allan Grant that he survived because of his "lucky pack". He then says "reverse Darwinism, survival of the MOST IDIOTIC!!!" I guess that is what it is when these dopes survive all those stupid stunts like skydiving

I thought of that scenario also....but at least a building full of screaming people (who JUST NOW found Jesus) wouldn't fall on my head.

Another weird thing....although the 1980 eruption of St. Helens happened in the morning....when it was daylight almost....Why do most catastrophic events like hurricanes and tornadoes happen at freaking 2am. Pitch black...can't see shit....but you can hear your whole world getting trashed around you. The only thing you see are brief glimpses of total chaos....when lightning strikes....
Now THERE is a scenario I do not think I would like to witness first hand..

    Hello,

Yeah that is hard to understand. Although, in northern climates daylight shrinks in the winter months so most stuff would happen at night. But the equatorial climates should have an equal chance of daylight occurances.

It's basically a 50/50 chance all around but....damn....all of the footage I see of hurricanes it taken through a videcam with floodlights attached to it....at least in my opinion..

I've been watching the Mount St. Helens thing closely, becuase i live pretty close, just across the border, so if i t blows, and the winds are right, I'll get covered in ash

  28. Where you there in 1980? I was in San Francisco, and they were giving away clear plastic cups filled with ash at local KFC's. A friend who'd lived up that way (Spokane?) did not appreciate the novelty...

it will not be as large as the first time as the cap is much smaller and thinner (the first blow blew away a good portion of the whole mountain)
