  1. In one of the threads (I can't find it), someone said you get better quality using MN instead of the set XP's and SP's. Is this true and how did you determine this? I record my XP stuff in MN32 instead of XP. Also, someone wrote that they record 1 hour programs on MN31 giving you more bitrate for video and 256 AC3. When I record in MN32, I get 9.56mb/s VRB, and LPCM audio.

in MN32 (same as FINE) quality i get a video bitrate around 8mbps w/ 1.5mbps LPCM audio.

    in MN31 quality i get a video bitrate around 9mbps w/ dd 2.0 ac3 @ 256kbps.

i cant distiguish the difference between lpcm audio & ac3 audio.. but i do feel better about having around 1mbps extra video bitrate.. not to mention an extra 5 minutes of recording time.

  3. is the pioneer inaccurate at reading the bitrate? because if you look at the display on the recorder, XP recordings show 9.56Mbps, but powerDVD reads somewhere around 8Mbps

oh well, who cares... do you see any difference between mn32 and 31?

i was basing the bitrate on what powerdvd showed me... which is why i said "around" & "about"..

i cant really tell a difference, but if i were to make a choice between having an extra 1mbps of video bitrate w/ ac3 audio or 1mbps less video bitrate and lpcm audio, i'll go for the extra 1mbps of video bitrate.

  5. I don't know how accurate PowerDVD is. MN32/XP on PDVD, I get 8.03Mbps, MN31 reads 8.66Mbps but on the dvd recorder, it reads MN32/XP 9.50, and in the 8's for MN31.

    https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

    [MN31]
    1 hour 5 minutes, 4.37gb, 256kbit/s audio, calculated bitrate = 9122kbit/s

    [MN32/FINE]
    1 hours, 0 minutes, 4.37gb, 1536kbit/s audio, calculated bitrate = 8227kbit/s

    9122 minus 8227 equals 895.. almost 1mbps.

i'd rather have 5 minutes extra recording time & 895kbit/s extra video bitrate..

  7. PowerDVD only gives the bitrate for the current frame you are viewing at that exact moment when you check it. It doesn't give you the average for the whole clip.

Bitrate Viewer is what you need.
