Hi all,
I have a epson 1280
I tired of paying for ink when i have other cartridge with ink.
My printer won't print because i ran out of black ink ,but i have almost a full color cartridge.
I don't have money for black ink right now but i do need to print!!!!!
Is there a way i can bypass this crap and print with the color only cartridge?
Thanks so much !
Anyway to hack this or mod?

Did you already change the printer preferences to color? It should be in the printer settings probably under the 'quality/color" tab.
-
yes ,i did switch over to color.
With epson you have to have the ink cartridges black and color with ink for the printer to work.As of now i only have color ink the black is emtpy.
So now it won't work!!!
Is there a way to over ride this function via a hack or mod?
Thanks.
I'll never buy a epson again.I should have done some research before i bought this printer.
Thanks for your time : )

This is a trick that works for me, but you will eventually have to buy another cartridge.
Take the black cartridge out and put it back in.
Use the cartridge change utility to recharge the ink, and it will show that you have ink.
You fool the computer and are able to keep printing. -
Thanks, but it's not working for me.
It goes thru the steps and trieds to charge it but it stills says it is empty.I did it 4 times.
Any other solution?
I don't have $30 bucks right now

I tried.
Wish I could have helped. -

Why don't you get generic carts for that epson...I do it all the time. The colors look the same, the only difference is that you'll need to clean the heads more often...
inkgrabber.com should have some for you... -
Thanks,I'll give it a go.
Also, is the quality of the pics the same as epson ink?
Thanks my friend: )

I'm not sure about your particular model of printer (I'm a canon user) but most newer epsons have a chip in the ink cart that tells it when it is empty. That is why it still won't work after you take it out and put it back in. The chip is telling the printer you put an empty cartrige back in. Epson says this is to keep you from printing when there is no ink (which will damage the print head). While this is true, epsons have been exposed to often stop printing long before the ink is gone (on some models) and this stops you from refilling.
A chip reseter can override the chip and make it think it is full again. They are prety easy to find, just do a google search. Here is one

You have to be carful if you use one though. If you run the ink dry it will damage the head. -
Actually with generic cartridges, my trick should work on his printer because the generic cartridges do not use chips.

Unless There is something that I am unaware of it would have to have a chip. When I say something that I am unaware of, epson has been sued more than onece because of these chips so maybe there are carts that disable it or something now.
I did a quick search and found that the 1280 is a chipped printer and therefor the ink cart must have a chip. There are several way to get around it though. There are carts that have custom chips that always report full

and tricks to reset an old cartrige using a new cartrige

The generic cartriges probably have some method of getting past it too.
There was mention of software that could reset the cartriges through your computer but the links were dead (two year old threads). Here is where I found some info.

edit:
I found this with a google search. It appears to be a working link to free software that will reset your cartriges so this should solve your problem.

I have not tried it of course (like I said I use a canon) but the link is to a forum where they say it works (the link to the free software is in the first post).
