    Hello,

I haven't seen a movie in the theater since July. Is this new Skycaptain worth seeing? It looks like a rip of Final Fantasy only set in some world war 2 type setting. It's supposed to be the only movie filmed all on bluescreen. I don't know, it seems kind of like all action and no substance. Opinions???

    Kevin

EDIT - The last two movies I saw in the theater were Spiderman 2 (what a disappointment, Xmen2 was better! -Let the flaming begin! ) and Garfield - don't laugh it was good!
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

    Hello,

Thanks for writing Bazooka. It does have Angelina Jolie in it, there's a plus . I might, I'm not sure though. Whenever I see these all cg movies now I just keep seeing Final Fantasy (which I saw in the theaters and have on disc). That was the first one to have REALISTIC humans in it.

The world of tomorrow is back from the 30's when those were visions of tomorrow. I think that it was a comic book and a general overall vision of the future.

But FF got ideas from it not the other way around.

See it just to see how many of the Star Wars/Luca$ references you can catch.

Speaking of "X Men" movies, I never planned on watching any until the first one came on TV last week. Once I got past Patrick Stewart pronouncing "Xavier" as "Ex-Zavier", it turned out to be very good. I want to see the second since it comes recommended by Yoda313. As Skycaptain, Epert and Roper split on the movie, so I think its worth a watch.

A friend of mine just saw it and he and his girlfriend both liked it. They usually don't agree on movies, so it must appeal to more than one type of audience. I plan on seeing it, when I get back from Vegas.

Xmen2 is WORTH it. If you liked the first the second is better. More action, more story, less hokey! (not saying 1 was hokey just that they had more money and time to smooth out the rough edges ).

And speaking of Sky Captain, I just say a local tv news spot on it. They said the director is from Flint, Michigan! Not bad. That's 2 sci fi directors from Michigan. Sam Rami of Spiderman fame is from Oakland County - can't remember the city.

I think I'll pass on it until I can watch it free on satellite. It just looks so cheesy .....computer animated FX almost always look so fake, and this movie seems loaded with it :P

    Hello,

Ever see FINAL FANTASY - The Spirits Within??? It's a great movie even though it has nothing to do with the games. It's incredible in its detail. The action is quite good too. Just because its all cg doesn't automatically mean its cheezy.

    Kevin

--However most movies I do wait for the video release. I only go to maybe 6-10 movies a year, MAX. There just aren't enough good ones to bother with--

Hence my use of the word "almost".

Most are crappy. Some are marvels, like T2. I guess I'm a traditionalist ...TNG was done using models. It just looks so much better.

Anyone remember the last action scene in Air Force One? Up until that point all the action was pretty believable-looking, and then they ruin the movie with that gay, fake-looking cg of the 747 crashing into the water.

I know that a lot of them seem better. Some really are. But the newer cg models are VASTLY improved. Compare Babylon 5 to Enterprise. The cg work is light years ahead in Enterprise.

I love old model work but cg gives one element laking in all model work (except ROTJ - the best model movie ever!) - MOVEMENT.

CG gives unbelievable camera angles and speed. In fact if you watch Episode 2 half the angles would have been impossible with models. Done right EP2 has incredible detail and depth to the ships used.

I agree Yoda. The newer cg is better than it was. But when you look at how far ahead of the curve Star Wars was - the first huge sci-fi movie to use believable models, and how real they still look, provided you don't twiddle with your briteness and contrast and see the almost-black square jerkily moving across the all-black space scene, I still prefer them unless .....unless a studio doesn't cut costs, and decides to do it up right, with two months of supercomputer time to render the scenes, like T2. Then I have to give cg the edge. But only if they do it right.

If it says ILM in the credits, it will have been done right!

EDIT - EXCEPT THE HULK! (ugh! I rented it and couldn't even finish it it was so bad)

Funny you mention ILM - a first-class outfit by the way.

Years ago they contracted with my company to use our supercomputers back in the days when we had two of the only 5 or 6 Cray models in existence that they needed. Sandia got billing on a few of their movies. I think one of them was either Meteor or Deep Impact. I'm not sure which one - maybe both.

We have a computer center here that would make most ubergeeks roll on the floor in orgasmic ecstacy - definitely popular spots for "family day" We have (it goes back and forth depending on the month) the world's fastest computer here - Red Storm - a 41.5 teraflop machine:

Well I didn't know ILM was lacking in hardware at any stage. I had assumed they could purchase their own equipment whenever they wanted. I assume they probably have what they need now.

    Yoda,
I edited my post. The world's fastest isn't ASCI Red anymore - it's Red Storm. I checked right after my post and saw the boo-boo. We still have ASCI Red along with Red Storm and several other teraflops-class machines.

I'm sure ILM can buy their own now. But back when they needed our help, I imagine it wasn't in the cards for them to drop many millions of dollars on a computer.

What of it??? Spiderman 2 was just a retread of 1. Nothing new. Same plot structure, evil villain, save the girl, yadda yadda yadda...

I was just kidding man...I went and saw garfield on a date back when it was in theaters and thought it was ok...nothing special. Spiderman on the other hand, was more exciting. But that's just my opinion.

Speaking of older CG. I happened to catch the tail end of 'The Last Starfighter' the other night on Dish and I was surprised how well the CG looked considering how old it was. Granted there wasn't much in the way of combination CG / live action, but it was a pretty good job.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  23. Angelina Jolie can't act. Sure they can do closeups of her face, but that doesn't mean she can act.

  24. The Last Starfigher rules. I remember watching it back in primary school... ah the memories.

Whenever its on TV late at night I always stay up late to watch it. That would have made a good series.

I still remember in The Last Starfighter, when after the battle, the aliens gave the kid a ride home and told his mother what a hero he was. Never saw that in any sci-fi movie before, and it was really touching. Beats any CG effects to me.

Very true. It gets tiresome when they try to substitute cg for a good plot. A great sci-fi movie will have both.

Absolutely! Loved it! It reminded me of The Rocketeer, in a good way. Like watching a comic book brought to life! I also liked the way, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, it implied other stories without wasting valuable screen time explaining everything. It'd make a good series (prequels/sequels) as long as they don't try to make a serious movie and give it a serious plot.
