    Good Afternoon to all,
Well I went and invested in a new ATI AIW 9600 card to replace my trusty old AIW Rage Fury 128 Pro.
I followed the instructions quite specifically. I even removed 'all' traces of the old card before I started.
First install, seemed to go OK. Or at least no error message. When I checked on the MMC 8.8 configuration tab to run system checks. It says that there were no WDM (capture drivers) installed. Although, I do remember seeing those being installed via the installer. But in any case there was no "Video In" button to use.
So I uninstalled, cleared out ATI and reinstalled. This time I chose only to install the options that I wanted vice everything. I chose not to install Hydravision, Remote, Library, Player and DVD. I am only interested in the video capture mode. Well, lo and behold there was no option to install any type of "Video In" capability.
I then went to the ATI site and downloaded the latest set of MMC 8.8 (Catalyst 3.10) drivers (all of them).
I then installed them one by one and got exactly the same result.

I think there must be some other set of drivers that need to be installed that did not come packaged with the HW.

I am open to helpful directions and ideas on how to get the program to capture video.

    Thanks,
    Ed

There's a uninstall utility from ATI, I think there's a link for it on the same page the display driver link is. Run that then run the installation program from your cd again.

    -or-

Go to Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Sound Video and Game controllers Look for ATI capture devices and uninstall them. Run the downloaded install exe.s as the directions from ATI state.

There's probably better info for this at www.rage3d.com I know there's a thread there I read a few months ago on how to manually uninstall everthing ATI.

Personally I would just reinstall XP because installing a new graphics card over an older one can cause conflicts.

US Guy: THanks for the overly technical advice. That advice sure fixed me right up. Next time keep it to yourself or read the original post, next time.

The Coalman: I did search the ATI site for driver support but could not find any thread related to this problem. I only mentioned the driver because I do remember reading somewhere on here or at ATI about a 3rd party set of WDM drivers that could be used.
I would go to ATI technical support but...... ATI being what ATI is. Anyway, when I get the new card working, I hope it is as good as my ol Rage 128 Pro.

If you happen to run across that thread please PM me but no need to go out of your way hunting it down.

    Thanks,
    Ed

If you can't contribute, don't post anything. This is your last informal warning about this.

  11. I had a similar problem with mmc 8.8, same card, and did as you did, fishing around on the ATI website trying to get something to work. I guess I got lucky because the mmc 9.1 worked for me. I've got Windows XP SP1 on a P4, if you have the same I'd give mmc 9.1 another try. I got rid of everything ATI related (including the temporary files ATI creates, and ran a registry cleaner) before reinstalling. Hope it works out for you.

    TheCoalman, DVDDave, SatStorm,
I do appreciate the help and I am not certain but combined my problem got solved. I went the uninstaller route and cleaned out every registry entry that was related to ATI (i.e., removed every instance of ATI) then went and downloaded MMC 9.02 and installed them piecemeal and voila I am back in business.
For USGuy, I went back and re-read the manual that came with the card. IMHO the person who wrote that document should be fired. What a POS. It is undoubtly the least informative document I have ever seen. Aside from the pretty pictures on how to install an AGP card and connect the cables (boy was that ever difficult), there is nothing of value.

But my thanks to all and to Baldrick for this site and allowing everyone to share ideas and help.

    THANKS,
    Ed

Amen! I've offered to rewrite those documents for them (not free, of course, which is probably why I was ignored!).

I dunno I just installed it like I was told, but using the latest drivers (4.9) and MMC (9.1), not what was on the CD. I only installed MMC 8.xx because ATI required is be installed when I updated my DAO files.

Oh well, works perfect, captures even better and does everything I want, even the REMOTE WONDER 2 works like a charm...

i don't mean to "Hi JACK" this thread but i have a question for lordsmurf if you see this.

i currently us a Pinnacle Studio AV/DV capture card. i think the results are good. i don't have an immediate need for TV capture but i want to put a HTPC together soon. i read all these horror stories about the AWI drivers. do you think the capture quality of both the Pinnacle and the AIW are similiar?? if so, would you recommend a USB TV device in conjuntion with the Pinnacle or should i take the leap and trade my 9800PRO Radeon for an AIW???

again--i don't mean to hi jack this thread.

    thanks---dave
