  1. both of my dvd drives only yield about 2.2 x speed when i use dvd decrypter

i have seen speed tests and boasts of over 10 times read speeds with tyhe pioneer 107d

my system is a new sony vaio

    3.2 mhz

dvd rom...... hl dt st 8162b claims read spped of 16x

dvd writer ..... pioneer 107d with read speed claimed at 12x

the best i can get is 2.2 times speed out of either one

this takes over an hour in many cases to run the ripper

yes i do have the computer set to the dma setting for all the drives

    any one have some ideas

The DVD consortium managed to get drive manufacturers to speed lock read speeds to make it take longer to copy disks. As you only need single speed to play a movie, they argued that any speed higher than this for DVD Video disks was unnecessary. The only way around it is to replace the current firmware with one that has been patched to remove the "Rip Lock" or speed inhibitor.

You probably still wont get sustained reads at the maximum capability, as most manufacturers cite burst speed as their maximum, and burst speed (as the name implies) on happens in bursts, but you should get average rips speeds of 7x or 8x.

You should look for firmware patches here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Be aware that using these patches does involve some risk, can make your drives unusable, and will invalidate your warranty.

I see their reasoning, but a DVD-ROM is also used for strictly-data discs, and crippling its read speed affects how fast you can copy data files.

You will find that with many drives they are built to detect DVD Video disks and cripple the spped only on those, and read at full speed with data disks.

    To answer the OP:

Firmware hacks make greater ripping speeds possible.

    Can't you burn DVD-Videos as UDF/ISO ?

I know you burn XBOX games that way.

I don't think the drives can tell, to be honest.
    If in doubt, Google it.

This is aimed at pressed disks. There are a number of identifiers that the drive can use to determine if it is an original video DVD. I know that before I changed the firmware in my NEC it could definately tell the difference between DVD Video originals and DVD Data originals.
