ok, just wanted to give me 2 cent issue on what had happend when i instaled the SP2 crap. After about a day or so, my firewall stopped working. It no longer loaded up, so i tried to re-instal it, windows told me then that the windows instaler prog was corrupted.
Well after that i went to do a restore, because of the sp2, it erased all of my previous restore points and kept the latest point of when sp2 was instaled. DAMN i said
onto step 3: i uninstaled sp2. After which my pc no longer had any sound. It showed my soundcard and everything (codecs, etc) were fine but the whole audio section was greyed out. Any attempt to re-instal the audio failed.
next to step 4
I had windows (from the xp disc) rpelace/fix errors by re-copying over the system files, no luck that didnt work either
step 5
caused me to reformat my entire pc and now everything is working fine again
so please use caution if planning to use SP2
(and that balloon notice it puts on your desktop (well taskbar) is crap as well)

You could have just downloaded the Firewall again... If the installer is corrupted, that isn't going to change by going back to pre-SP2.
As for the balloon notice, what are you talking about exactly? That was there since WinXP was first introduced... and you can turn it off in just the same way if you don't like it.
In any case, SP2 is probably best installed over a new installation. There are many worthwhile updates and benefits in SP2 over SP1. Even if you don't like the "new" features like the Security Centre or DEP, you can't turn them off but still retain the updated version of IE6 as well as the newest updates.

thats the thing, my firewall wasnt corrupted at all. In fact after uninstaling sp2, i then tried my firewall thing again (3rd party not microsoft firewall), it worked fine up till a point, but the fact is it wasnt corrupted, sp2 made it that way. After doing the reformat in the end, the firewall instaled fine like it should have to begin with. And, still their was no reason after the sp2 uninstal i should have lost my audio at all, yet......
the balloon i refer to showed up in the task bar (bottom right of the screen) and i could not turn it off, it was very annoying. Although im sure their was some way to do it (perhaps via the regisirty) -
How strange (re: firewall installation).
What firewall do you use?

DVD Shrink 3.1.x and Nero Recode always crashed my computer no matter what.
SP2 fixed it.You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -
I take it then that that dude didn't do a full system backup, prior? That was highly recommended by several sites as the system restore isn't foolproof (as he found out).
Did a full backup to a stack of +RW's, installed SP2 and it found that I was already running Zonealarm and AVG-AV. No problems for me. Left the security thingie on as it always reminds me when AVG needs an update.Like a flea circus at a dog show! -
I use AVG with SP2... and it does "know" the status of AVG.
In any case, if the Security Centre is bothering you, just turn it off if you manage your own firewall and antivirus programs.

Now that I look for it, I can't find it... and yet, on my Notebook, I remember finding a setting and turning it off.
Anyway, Google search yielded this: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_zdpcm/is_200211/ai_ziff31765
