  1. What would be a decent sound card for capturing from VHS? I recently upgraded everything in my PC except for the sound card so I guess I'm looking for an excuse to buy a new one. Currently, I have a Soundblaster Live! Value edition that I've had for years. I don't have it installed in the PC now. I upgraded to a Soyo motherboard which has "C-Media" integrated sound with a PCI panel with optical and coax in's and out's. Right now I'm just using the onboard sound. Honestly, I can't tell a difference in the sound quality with the onboard or what I had with the Soundblaster.

Am I missing something by not upgrading my sound card? I've been looking at the Soundblaster Audigy series as well as the Turtle Beach cards. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a sound card. I don't play games on my PC and only need sound for MP3's and for the line-in to capture from my VCR. My video camera is firewire so I don't even need it for that.

Should I look at a different card or just be happy with what I have now?

  2. I use the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and it works great, especially for music. Its dirt cheap now too but still one of the best.

For MP3's, your "onboard" sound card should be just fine. For the more discerning music lover and archivist, a quality PCI sound card should be a first priority.

I use a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in each of my desktops, which offers superb sound reproduction at a very resonable price (under $70.). These cards may not be the best for gaming (SB Audigy is best), but they are unsurpassed in music for a resonable price.

The Santa Cruz input volume will probably need to set a little higher than other cards, but you will not have the installation problems so comon with SoundBlaster cards. Use with CDex, Audacity, MP3Gain and WavGain (all freeware) for all your music needs.
