This is probably an old subject, but I thought I just saw an add for Pizza Hut offering EZ-D movies. First, has anyone else seen this promotion lately? Second, weren't they a major flop because they are expensive for just a 2 day viewing period? Third, can they be copied to a hard drive, like a normal DVD, and burned to a DVDr? Haven't ever seen or used one first hand to know. I'm interested in getting a pizza just to find out if nobody has any idea. Unfortunately they're movies I already have or don't really care to waste a blank on.

FYI - EZ-Ds are a disposable DVD which are vacuum sealed in a package. Once exposed to air, there is a 48 hour period to watch it or the disc goes black and cannot be read by the player. (and you thought you had coasters before)

    They are still too expensive.

This has been an issue since they hit the scene.

It is cheaper to rent from BB.

    EZ-D is a dud.

I figured they would be. If they were cheaper than a CDR I could see them taking off for rental places using them. But are my eyes deceiving me, or did I see Pizza Hut have an add saying they'll deliver EZ-Ds with an order? And can they be copied like a regular DVD?

    I don't know.

I don't see any reason why not.

But I think I read they are about seven dollars each.

I'll see if I can get one with a Pizza Hut order and try it out. Just hoping someone else had insight on it before I go coaster happy. Sad thing is I'll only have 2 days to test it out, so I should have results quickly.

    Hello,

Careful! I believe it was brought up that the disposable ones act like rental dvds. You only have rights to it for the rental period - ie NO COPYING. Sorry.

Seems like there are ways to get around the time limit. I wonder if that's why they never really took off.

You could probably do the same with a permanent marker.

    This is the thought:
The EZ-D plays like a regular DVD, so it's encoding and encryption has to be the similar to a regular DVD. So let's say using an OTF (on the fly) decrypter (IE: DVD43) or a HDD Save decrypter (IE: DVD Decrypter), we should be able to copy the DVD to another Disc or to the HDD just the same as any DVD. What I'm wondering is if there is anything special about the dye that won't let it be recorded in the traditional way?

    Hello,

Doramius - I'm not saying it COULDN'T be copied. I'm just saying I think I read in other threads that the disposable ones are essentially "rentals". Meaning you SHOULDN'T copy them.

    Kevin
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

    Recorded? Or read?

Both I guess. If it's read differently, I'd think the disc wouldn't work in some players. However, if it's read in such an odd way, it might create some kind of error that may not allow it to be recorded. This is just theory or guesswork as I haven't had the experience with an experiment like this. I think Wed. is going to be our Pizza Night, because were heading out to CA for the weekend. If the offer lasts through next week, I might get it next week instead. I might have to figure out a way to get 2 disc to be on the safe side.

  14. if it's single layer it's parallel track path (PTP), if it's dual layer it can be either PTP or opposite track path (OTP). I believe these disposable discs are all single layer. they are manufactured just like all commercial movies but they go through the special process of adding a substance that reacts to air and clouds up, preventing the laser from reading it, which gives them their disposable properties

    Doramius,

Not that it is any of my business, but why all this interest in a disc that cost more than it cost to rent from BB? You are really paying about seven dollars to rent a disposable disc, when you can rent from BB for about $4.
