I just bought a Panasonic DMR-E50 for only $200 at Wal-Mart! It was brand new and never used. Anyway, I have owned a DMR-E30 for about a year and a half. Is is possible to eliminate the black level bug by simply transfering my old DVD-R copies using the DMR-E30 as a source and the DMR-E50 as a recorder since the DMR-E30 will display the recordings properly? Or is it better to simply go back the VHS sources?
This player looks almost identical to the DMR-E30, only it has been stripped down. Not a big deal, but the fancy two-way diplay mirror is gone. The unit is lighter and seems to built using cheaper material/s and it should since it retailed for almost $300 less than the E30 originally did.
One thing I noticed is although it has a internal FAN, I have never seen it move in the last few hours that I've used it. The E30's fan was external and it would move the minute you turned the power on. I guess this unit's fan most be equiped with a thermostat or timer. I seemed to remember having a Technics (a Panasonic company) reciever with an external fan and it never came on. It would get extremely HOT which is why I got rid of it for a Yamaha that has no fan and it's always cool.
I will admit (like Ejai and others have mentioned) that the black level (darker input) makes a HUGE difference. I didn't think I would notice, but it's like night and day.

You could possibly do the transfer but you will lose quallity. Remember MPEG video is compressed video which means you have already lost come quality in the process. All you would be doing is compressing the video again causing more loss of quality.
I also own the E30 and E50. My E30 movies are still intact and I can't see losing more quality by compressing the video again. I end up changing the brightness and color controls. I just lick my wounds and move on.
You can try it if you want to but I don't think the end results will be worth the process.
Just my opinion. 8) -
The fan on the E50 does only come on when the unit reaches a certain temperature. I tried a couple of returned ones from Wally World awhile back, every one of which had problems, one of them the fan never did come on and it got VERY hot. If it's getting really hot then the fan circuits may be bad.
