I ordered 50 Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4X from Rima for $50 and they sent me the cheaper 8X and charged me the same price. (the 8Xs were $40). I specifically wanted the 4X because I thought they might be more compatible with my burner (Lite-On-Combo LTC-48161H). DVDInfoPro reads them as Yuden000T02 8#T7 Revision 00h. It reads the Media Type as DVD+R and the Book Type as DVD+R .... but the Disc type as DVD-ROM. I'm a little confused since I ordered DVD-R. I must be missing something here. Could somebody bring me up to speed on why this isn't read as DVD-R? Also .... the paper insert that came with the discs reads: New 8x Speed DVD+R Standard. So is it really +R? Now it burned and played just fine (right up to just under 4.7GB {as read by MemoriesOnTv } which my Ritek G04s won't do .... so it seems to work just fine ... but have I burned a DVD+R instead of a DVD-R? And if so I'm wondering what the compatibility will be? Appreciate any advice and experiences.

  2. They sent you +R's. Whether they are as compatible as -R's is the subject if debate.
Basically if you change the book type (you need a burner with book type setting) then they MAY be as compatible as DVD-R's, but if not then -R's are more compatible.
Personally I'd send them back for the -R 4x's.

edit: I'm talking about compatibilty in standalone players. Obviously the discs are compatible with your burner if you burned one ok.

  3. dvd+r should work fine if you have a newer dvd player, and if the dvd player read the disc as dvd-rom even better cuz thats the same type as commercial dvds.

    I would send them back.

    A. They did not send you what you ordered, period. That is unless you ordered 4x DVD+Rs and are mixing it up.

    B. DVD+Rs often require bitsetting to work with some equipment like older players, certain laptop drives and mac drives. My burner does not supprt bitsetting so DVD+R would basically be useless to me since I need to play all my discs on my laptop.

Return it and ask them to send 4x discs like they promised and ask them to pay for your shipping costs too.

Thanks for the replies guys .... appreciate. One thing I don't understand is that doing a query shows that my burner does not support the +R write feature ... and yet it appears that it burned it that way!! This Book Type and Bit Setting is a little confusing .... anyone know of a good tutorial that I can read so I can increase my understanding a little?

I think you are confused. The Lite-On-Combo LTC-48161H is a Combo drive, not a DVD burner. It reads DVDs, but it does not burn them. Check out cdfreaks for info on some hacked firmware that will improve read speeds.

    winifreid,
You are right and I am embarassed ... I'm getting in too much of a hurry and stuck the burned DVD into a different system to ID the disk .... and shouldn't have IDed the drive at all in that system! I jumped the gun! The drive that burned the DVD is a Lite-On-DVDRW LDW-451S. I had so much trouble with the Ritek G04s so I ordered the Taiyo Yudens, but then I discovered that they are +Rs and my end question is this: What kind of problems should I expect if I just keep the +Rs and use them instead of sending them back for -Rs?? It appears that there may be only minor compatibility problems.

The only ones I know about are that some players will recognize - and others +. One advantage with the 451 is that you can set the + to rom via bit setting or book type which will increase its compatability. I suspect you will be fine with the +, especially since they can be burnt at 8x. You should check out the liteon forum at cdfreaks to learn about firmware hack that will greatly improve your burn quality and speed. I have a 451@832 that works great. That means it is just like yours, but I used firmware to upgrade it to a 832 so I can burn + media at 9x and also burn DL if I ever get soem blanks.

Thanks winifreid, that's good information. I tried setting the book type to ROM but the "change" and "write now" targets are greyed out and when I do a "Query" a message at the bottom appears that says F/W not support ! My KProbe version is 2.3.0 and my F/W Revision is GSB4. Could I have a model that doesn't support Flashing?

That is an old firmware version. You should upgrade. Check this out: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=97590&page=1&pp=25

I can't remember if your version supports bitsetting or not, but later versions do either automatically or via a bitsetting tool. (But it is unlikely you will need to bitset. I never do.)

Greats sites Gil T .... Now I'm wondering why I've been using -R all this time!! It appears that +R is much more versatile .... but only slightly only less compatible, and less likely to produce errors!

  15. you do have a burner that supports bitsetting....use it, and you'll love it.

people say that -r is more compatilbe...that SUCKS, i burn + ONLY, do bitsetting, and play on EVERY player....unless that is 15 years old...

so, that sompatiblity is a big bogus. people just stick to what THEY LOVE. I play +RW on old payers, as crap Panasonic, which are the worst players out there.

you find firmware here http://www.firmware.fr.st/ or on the lite-on official site.

    + is faster and better....
