  1. Hello All,
I have a Panasonic DVD-RP56 and I learned that it will not play SVCDs but it will play XVCD just fine. In fact it will play VCDs up to 720x480 up to 2000 bitrate. At that resolution I can still fit 2 hours on 2 CDs but Here is my problem. I've been trying to find another player that will also play these non-standard resolutions of VCDs. I spent around $250 for my Panasonic and I'm really looking to spend about $100 for a second player. I bought an APEX 3201 and it seems real nice but chokes on the 480x480 and 720x480. I tried this cheap Mintek that BestBuy had on sell for $89 and it almost played it. It plays the 480x480 but pauses about .5 seconds every couple of seconds. Maybe a lower bit rate would fix that.
Anyway, Anybody else tried these resolutions and know of a brand that will play them.
    Thanks,
    Mike
    P.S.
480x480 VCD on the Progressive Scan Panasonic output to a HDTV looks about like DVD quality on a normal TV...

  2. My Panasonic DVD-RV31 plays XVCD up to 720x480 @ up to 2500 bitrate. I cannot catch sight of a difference between DVD and XVCD on my 27' TV.

  3. Ironically, a Sony I used once had no problem with those resolutions and bitrates for VCD...if you don't mind having to using CD-RWs for everything.

I just bought the DEAWOO DVD model DVG-5000N. The DVD is awsome, it has S-Video. Digital outputs, Video components output. The great part is it play VCD, XVCD, SVCD, XSVCD, I tested all of these format and they all work great, both video and audio, PAUSE/STEP/ SLOW MOTION/ FWD/BACK all work fine. The best result I tested is XSVCD 480x480 at 6000 Kbps, audio set at 44.1 Kbps. It also worked at 480x480 at 8000 Kbps but the inprove is not significant. The setting at 720x480 does not show any improve at all.
GREAT new is it only costs $99.99 and there are plenty of them at Sam's Club.
I used the Dazzle DVC II to capture clips from my VCR/Camcorder and the ULEAD DVD MOVIE FACTORY software ($50.00) to write the clips on my CD burner.
The ULEAD DVD MOVIE FACTORY works great. The DVDit sofware came with the Dazzle DVC II may work BUT it sucked I could not installed the software, it loaked up my computer.

    GOod luck

My Sony DVP-S525D handles 704x576 just fine at 2.5mbps. It *will* read CD-R - that is what I use - you just have to find a CD-R branch that uses the right organic dye. You don't have to pay CD-RW prices.

  6. Dun99,
I was very interested in your post since you provided information about the DEAWOOD DVD model DVG-5000N. I was looking at it in Sam's Club. I want to start doing VCD's and my current DVD player is not good with VCD's. Plays DVD's very well. So having to buy another player I didn't want to spend alot if it wasn't necessary. Looks like the 5000N works like they say on the box for all the different VCD formats. I'm impressed have to get one. Have you found any problems with it?
