    Not one coaster using IMATION (RICOH) DVD+R 4x speed can be burned @ 8x speed on Plextor 708A drive. I don't have any problems with them playing back on my standalone dvd players. Although I don't use DVD+R media much because DVD-R is much more compatible on older model standalone dvd players. Some standalone players can not playback correctly if using 4x media burned @ 8x speed.

    Not really related to the topic, but i can manage to burn at 4x media (ritek) at only 2x max on my sony dru500a :P

    I use Pioneer 107 and Prodisc 4x media and can burn at 8X with no problems. But prefer to do them at 6X. Firmware version 1.13. Can't remember where I got it from sorry.
