Without going into too much detail, I was just wondering if bad media can throw off or re-adjust the laser lens where it will not be able to read anymore DVD's? A friend states his grandmother has a Sony DVD player, He burnt a movie onto a Unifino. The grandmother said the movie was skipping and pausing, she took the movie out and now nothing will play.

I can't see how. The laser shines at an angle, reflects, and shines back on a sensor. A bad disk will just affect how much or how little light gets reflected back to the sensor.

Maybe the lens got dirty? Most people are suprised when they are having read problems and I suggest using a laser lens cleaner. They look confused and say "I didn't know I needed to do that"

I think the question was about a player, not a recorder. Whole different animal there bucko.

And I don't believe any of the stories that media alone ever broke any DVD recorder or player unless it delaminated, flew apart into pieces, and the shrapnel hit something delicate inside. Even that's a stretch :P

Forcing your dvd player or any component including your cd or dvd drives to read media that has been damaged or burned too fast is making the component work harder than it was designed to. Yes, bad media will eventually ruin your stuff.

All the jackasses who burned their videogame stuff at 20X + are now complaining because their consoles don't read the discs any more.
