Subtitle creator or editor for OSX?

I'm searching for a tool witch can create and edit subtitles for OSX. I want to create fansubs for some anime movies. Is there a tool witch is easy to use an has lot of features?

as far as i know there is subsync, titlelab and dvdsp 2/3...to edit subs.

Well i already got these apps but they not useful for me. What i want is a program witch will let you create subtitles for all kind's of videoformats (AVI, MPEG4, MOV etc.). It must have some kind of timeline to correctly place the subtitle text and length. Also it must have multible fonts, styles, sizes, colours and the text must be placeable anywhere on the picture you want. Isn't there any solution for OSX?

well, for creating...titlelab. But, you will need a way to time them correctly. If these are dvds from japan(im assuming), then there will be no subs what so ever on the disc(rare for it to have subs, if they do, that just made your job a alot easier).

ok....so rip your dvd with osex, then convert the video to DV, then convert the audio to aiff with mac3dec. The open them with Final cut pro. Start to doing the tedious task of timing.(reccomendation translate first, have the script at hand, then do TONS of copy and pasting with times and words), do all this by copying it into titlelab. Then you can adjust the timing on the whole if its too slow or too fast(probably will be fine). Then export to .srt or quicktime text. That will take a few days to weeks to complete. I did one Episode of Lupin the 3rd(the original version) and it took me around 2 weeks to get it all nice a spruced up.

With subs(either downloaded off the net or from the dvd)

ok, rip the dvd(duh), then open the .vob in FFmpegX, go to filters, and extract subs in .srt.(if .srt or .sub is downloaded from the net, skip this step) Wait a lil bit and you will have a .srt file. Usually very incorrect, and if the source is in japanese, you wont have text at all, just gybrish. Now, the important parts are the timecodes. Assuming you allready translated the movie, and have the script, then you can just copy and paste, then do whatever else you need, then export to .srt or quicktime text.


If you are trying to copy the people with the FREAKISHLY fancy fansubs(as in karaoke, multiple colors, fancy text, all in one movie) you can do that with exporting to quicktime text, IF, you split the parts you want to add specialness to into different subs themself. Quicktime can handle all of them, and you can choose where the hell to put them on the screen. Then just export it to an mov(i dont know fif the divx codec will hardsub them to the video) and you have your fansubbed anime. If im corrct, you can eport tgo mp4 too, if you use the 3ivx codec to encode your movie.

Hopefully that helps, i am going to try and fansub my copy of the Waterboys TV Drama fairly soon.

Thanks for the detailed answers. I'm aware that this subtitle stuff can take a long time to do. But i'm confident to do this. In the meantime i found an app called Miyu. It's very easy to use and and does exactly what i want. It let's you to set markers, edit text and timing and this in realtime! Unfortunatly it has less features, there are only one font, colour and the positon is fixed on the screen.

wow, tis a good program, but i would use it just to get timecodes, the copy to titlelab. Titlelab can do magical things for mac fansubbers. Although the karaoke feature is not one of them(that i did in vpc and was a complete bitch, dont try it, really, dont), you can make the text scroll to the audio. I did that when subtitleing a familyguy episode into japanese, to show my friends what they where missing. Plus, since magical quicktime can support multiple textracks, it can all work flawlessly(or flawless at the very end) with plain text, italiced, colorfull, scrolling, and whatever else you want, all into one movie file, prettymuch hardsubbed to thye screen.

BTW: what are you going to subtitle?

I want to subtitle the 1st episode of "Shingetsutan Tsukihime" but i never done it before so this is the first time. The translation is in progress the only thing i need to do is creating the subtitles and i preffer to use my G5 for this job.

I've tested this Miyu app for some time now. For the first try it will do the job just fine. Hopefully this app will get better in the future. For now it's ok for me but i will also try to use FCP and other software in the future.

thats cool. I am going to try miyu with Waterboys first episode today. Right now theres a ******* gigantic typhoon over kyuushuu so i have absolutely nothing to do. Miyu does seem to make the timing thing a bit easier. I tested it very quickly with my Zatoichi dvd(which has english subs aloready on it but o well, only japanese dvd i have thats only in japanglish). Worked fairly well. I still am boggled about how the proffesional fansubbers get so many effects into 1 freakin episode. Oh well. Us Macmen will soon learn and harness this secret(and make it b etter than our PC friends!)
