    The new Squeeze compression suite was released last week with a new AVC codec, and my Mac is getting fixed so I can't try it out (my PC is too slow so it would be frustrating on it).

    I tried Handbrake's AVC/264 encoder and was really amazed at the qualityize ratio but it has fixed quantization so you can't control the bitrate.

    5 second full quality .dv file exported to AVC_HD_720_Hi in 4 minutes on PowerBook 17" 1Ghz, 1Gb RAM...Exporting to AVC 1Mbps stream took around 60 seconds...There is 15 AVC presets which You can change or create Your own..

    I tried converting dv to mpg1 and was not impressed. Poor quality and many ugly digital artifacts. I'll stick with Compressor.
