  1. I just stumbled over to recent DVDs that were released by Columbia Tristar.

    German (Region 2) Rental Version:
    Gothika
    The Missing

MTR can't rip these. Neither can DVDBackup. A read error / file system error is reported. First I thought I had a scratched disc (which is not the case). The read error occured shortway into the main feature (7_0.vob @ 130MB rips ok, 7_1.vob dies after a couple of megs).

Did any of you encounter something similar?

Somewhere I read that it could be a new type of copy protection.

First of all, copying rentals is a crime, and we don't support that. Second, I've heard that there is some new kind of copy protection being used in Germany, especially for rental discs, though the symptoms seem different from what you describe. We can't do anything about that, however, until you send us incompatible discs, so that we can try to fix it. Until then, I'd suggest trying to get other copies of those movies, and seeing if they still won't rip. Often, they can be damaged in a manner that is not clearly visible to the naked eye.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

FWIW, I had a problem with Gothika (region 1). Somethings afoot.

FWIW, he said "rental version" rather than "I rented these". He may have meant that they're Previously Viewed rentals that he bought.
