Would you recommend the NEC 3500A if it was my only DVD drive? Have the reading problems the older 25xx models had been fixed? Because I could also get a Pioneer DVR-108 if it hasn't.

I just picked up a black NEC-ND3500a from a local retailer for $119 CDN. I was looking at getting the retail version of the Pioneer A08, but after reading an early review of the 3500 I chose it over the Pioneer. I just tried reading a copy protected music CD on the drive and it read it just fine. My Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM drive was not able to "bypass" the copy protection (using Autorun only). The same holds true with a copy protected game (Doom 3), I didn't have any problems launching the game using the NEC drive.
I've just burned a DVD using CloneDVD 2.0, the program found the new drive without a problem and burned the movie at the maximum speed of the media (4x). The drive just as quiet as the LG-GSA4040 that it is replacing.
