I have downloaded some quicktime trailers and are in the process of making them into SVCD. On some of them it sounds loke the sound comes from inside a can. My question is, are there a way to "clean" the sound up and in that case what program do i need. Thank you very much.

What do mean from'inside a can'? Are the lows and highs cut off or bandlimited, is the dynamic too low (like old cassette player)? Or too much noise ? If dynamic too low or the source is frquency limited, there no easy way to reconstruct the missing parts (I'm using CooolEdit to fresh up my VHS captures, but though lot of filters are available, it can't do wonders. You can use it to remove the background noise, if that's your problem.
I only know of a HW device for improving sound, i.e. parametric EQ with tube enhancer, which adds some harmonic distortion to give a more transparent sound.
Anyway, if you like, you can send me a snippet (max 3MB as wav or mp3) and I see whta can be done!

sven_pether: What program are you using to encode? If you are using TMPGEnc, try one of the external sound tools. They produce better results than TMPGEnc by itself.

If you are not using TMPGEnc, you might want to demux the file and use a 3rd party application to clean up the sound. Many people on this site can advise you on that a lot better than I can. On the rare occasions when I play with the audio, I use GoldWave:
