I went to the Virgin store downtown and was amazed they got some British shows on DVD. I bought all they had. So my question to the forum: How many seasons are there in these shows (did I get them all?)? And are they any good (I just got home and probably won't see them til next week, maybe some over the weekend)?

Black Adder I, II, III, Goes Forth, Back & Forth
    Red Dwarf I & II
    The Office Complete First Series
    The Office Complete Second Series
    His name was MackemX

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

  3. I believe Rowan Atkinson made a Black Adder movie thats not on your list, "A Blackadders Christmas Carol". I assume it got something to do with the Blackadder series but it still doesnt seem to be a part of it. Oops, that didnt make too much sense maybe? =) Havent seen christmas carol myself so wouldnt know for sure.

  5. There was a vhs of "a Blackadders christmas carol" i do not think that is avaliable on vhs yet, there was also a fifth series called Blackadder back and forth not sure if that is out yet. Best to ask Will Hay he is a big Blackadder affecianado.

There are eight series of Red Dwarf

There were two office christmas specials last christmas which are not avaliable on dvd.

Don't know if you have ever seen Only Fools and Horses but that is the best english comedy in my opinion.

Mostly PBS for the other stuff, but The Office isn't playing on it that I know of. I picked up the first DVDs after hearing alot of good stuff about it. I figured it would be good for some entertainment on my overnight shift. Instead I was bored.

  8. They are all excellent shows IMHO.

Blackadder I is a little bit slow and shot differently to the next 3 series. II III and IV are much better than I, with IV probrably being the best. There are specials such as the Christmas Carol and Back and forth, but there are only 4 proper series.

Red dwarf has 8 series, and gets much better when Kryten appears as a regular charachter in Series 4, it's still good upto this point though.

The office is one you either love or hate, personally I love it. There are only 2 series, plus a 2 part Christmas Special which is actually quite a nice closure on the 2 series, but like Russ says not available yet.

As well as only fools, something else to look out for is a comedy from Peter Kay, called Phoenix Nights, absolutely brilliant.

Kryten becomes regular in series 3

Blackadder is GREAT, series three is my favourite, with horse willies and cigarillo cases galore.

I capped the office specials off of freeview, good stuff.

Thanks, kinda thought so. Though one note, generally here a SERIES is the WHOLE RUN of the show (ie SEASONS 1-10 up until the show ends).

One other note - a season here is generally one broadcast year - usually 20 episodes, though as noted can go higher.

Hey, I can appreciate some British comedies. It's just a matter that a lot of comedy is dependent on the local context. If you don't live there you obviously won't get some of the jokes. However, slapstick is universal. And many things CAN translate. I do appreciate RED DWARF, the little I've seen of it. (it's kinda like a movie-less version of Mystery Science Theater 3000).
