Hi guys, I don't know much about DVD PLayers, all I know is that my JVC XV-S40 sucks big time b/c it can't play .mpg as data when I burnt it on disks.
Can anyone tell me if the Philips DVP-642 can play .mpg files on my
dvd-r's and cd-rs disds if I burn them as data.
I have tons of .mpg files that I want to burn to dvd-r but I have to encode them to dvd, and that takes a long time.
Please recommend if I should buy this baby or not, and or if there is another DVD Player that can play disks when .mpg fiels are burnt as data.
BTW... I wanted to know if the philips DVP-642 can play Dual layer discs..
Thank you for you time...

Not sure about DL DVD with this player, but it will definately play mpeg1 and mpeg2 when burned as a data disc (as well as DivX and some Xvid).
I have this player and am very happy with it, but I have seen some threads regarding issues with displaying different DivX avi resolutions correctly, however I have not personally experienced this problem.
If you do a search on this player, you will turn up a couple of lengthy threads that will tell you everything you need to know. -
yes to all your ?. FYI if you look in the HW forum or do a search for that player on this site it will give you all the info you need and then some

Thank you guys, I have bought this DVD player. And it works great... I very much like the look of it as well.
Again, thank you -
The Philips isn't a bad player for the money. But the Lite-on players are far superior in handling divx and megs. I occasionally get stutters/skips on my Philips playing divx dvd discs or iso meg dvds, but my Lite-on will play them flawlessly. Also the Philips has a tendency to pixelate in fast action DVDs.
Unfortunately, Lite-on doesn't make the Divx players anymore or update their firmware. But that hasn't been a problem so far. If you're still interested in a Lite-on, the Norcent DP-501M is a rebadged Lite-On LVD-2001. (from TechBargains.com)
Computers4Sure has the norcent DP-501M Progressive for $169 - $15 off $150 Code: LSC994 = $154 shipped free.
Plays MPEG4, memory cards, WMA, DVDs, SVCD, VCD, DivX, Xvid, CD, & MP3. Upscales to 720p or 1080i.
