  1. Hi,

I have been using a newish powerful computer to perform these conversions with tmpgenc very happily.

I have another computer at my girlfriends house which is considerably older...with the following specs:

    10 gb free memory
    248 MB of Ram
    500 Mhz processor

Is running tmpgenc a lost cause on this machine?

If so is there another encoder that may be acceptably fast on this machine.

Or...is my hardware simply too old for this kind of stuff?

With my limited computer knowledge it seems that it is the processor speed of 500 mhz that is the weakest link in my chain. The memory and RAM, whilst not great, are acceptable i think.

Finally, if the last is true, is processor speed something you can improve without buying a totally new computer?

    Many thanks,

    K

  2. Less than two years ago, I was doing just that on a 300 Mhz machine. So yeah it''ll do it, but make sure it doesn't have crap bogging it down. The usual, defrag, check for spyware, virii, etc. Might as well add to the get-rid-of list never-used progs, useless files and general clutter. Besides, you don't have a hell of a lot of free space anyway. Start it going overnight and don't screw around with it while it's encoding.

Pardon me if you know all that, wouldn't want you to think you're being talked down to...Good Luck.

Edit: BTW, the RAM on my old comp (still have it) is 128.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  3. thanks a lot for your reply - don't worry you're not talking down

just a couple of questions - is tmpgenc the best thing for the job or is there a faster encoder that would make more sense on a slower computer?

is it possible to improve processor speed\, or does that just meen getting a new computer?

    thanks so much.

ps, did you read my other post about codecs? still haven't got any replies and wondered if you had any thoughts?

    Hello,

You could always use more ram. Though I think Win 98 stops using it effectively after 192mb of ram (not sure but 98 does have a limit with using Ram effeciently).

Conversion takes a long time with any program. However you could try these out:
