  1. Has any ever used a slot cooling fan? (goes in the back like a ISA or PCI card)

What did you think about it's performance?
I was thinking about making a ultra small case for a PVR and this looks like a great option for a thin setup

    You are going way back.
An Isa card belongs in a museum.

    Seriously,

    I thought about trying one.

  3. I had one with two multi-directional fans on the inside that enabled you to cool two components using the one device. Seemed an ok idea - never really needed it though.

They work very well for cooling video cards or other cards that might generate alot of excess heat. The fan on my video card went out and I just used one of these instead since it was lying around. It actually cooled it better even though the fan was farther away. So for a PVR I'd say its a good choice, except that mine tended to make alot of noise. You might want to buy one of those shock absorbers cause I think these things tend to rattle.

I wouldn't try using this do anything other than cool cards though. I don't know what your case is going to look like but its probably safe to say that your video card is going to go above the blower and so its not going to do anything for your CPU or motherboard cooling.

They do make PCI blowers that extend out like an arm and are positional. You could use this to blast air onto a particular problem spot.

  5. Dear ole' dad was having a cooling problem and one of these goodies did the trick on his old AMD based desktop. In looking at the specs 18cfm is a pretty large volume of air. Should be very good for you external case... as long as you can get power to it off some type of spliter

I have one of these in one of my systems, and it blows!

    (That's a good thing)

It works well and I'd recommend it for anyone who has a free slot in their system and is looking to keep things a bit cooler. They start at $4 at Newegg (although shipping is just as much), but if you've got the space or more systems, get a few. They've even got a 32cfm for $7 with free shipping (best deal if you're only getting one).

I tried a slot fan once on my old Dell 4100 system. That pc had an open slot (not pci) above the AGP slot... i thought it would be a great spot for the slot fan. WRONG. It was sucking all the air from my CPU cooler shroud. Causing sort of a tug of war between the slot fan and the CPU fan... the CPU fan was loosing... saw weird dashes flicking across my screen.

On my new rig... Dell 400sc, I put a VGA Silencer on my ATI 9800 pro (now XT). Works awsome! Expells all the hot air from the video card out the back like a furnace.

  8. I use one of these in my daughters computer, seems to work well, I have to take it out and apart every 5 months or so and give it a good cleaning.

I plan on getting one like this for my new system that is coming tomorrow AMD XP3200+ Barton, oh yeah I can't wait.

I keep it right beside my video card.
