    Hi,

I’m going to change my Prescott 3,01GHz for a Q6600.

I’m thinking of keeping the old cooler I had for this Prescott, a ZALMAN CNPS7700 copper-aluminum.

Is this cooler good enough for the Q6600 or I have to buy a new one? I mean, I hope the Q6600 wont’ be so hot as the Prescott, and I can't afford to spend more money if it’s not necessary, but I don’t want either to have temperature issues with this new CPU.

    Thank you in advance.

You're going to need the 1 back plate and 1 clip support for socket 775. I tried to use one of my older zalman 7000 cpu w/the support brackets and clip but it wasn't compatible with my Gigabyte P35-ds3L mobo. The capacitors were in the way of the socket 775 bracket. First check if your motherboard is capable to use the zalman bracket and clip support. If it is then you can use that zalman 7700 but if not then you'll have to buy a new cpu hsf for your q6600.

  3. If you are using an off-the-shelf case, then you most likely need a quite case fan too. HP, Compaq, Dell factory case are well design for heat extraction, the fan hardly turn on, but off-the-shelf case are mostly sold on look and size.

I strongly suggest you check the dB of those fans. I have been annoyed by that loud CPU fans on my 775 CPU as I am typing now.

The Kentsfield chips run about 10C less than Prescott, your cooler will be fine. Even with a mild over clock.

  5. The Q6600 doesn't consume much more power than a Prescott P4. 105 vs 85 watts TDP. In practice, you may find the Q6600 consumes less power because you will rarely be running all four cores at 100 percent, whereas it's easy to max out a P4.

The OP has to buy the Zalman bracket and clip for the socket 775. As mentioned depending on his motherboard is a big factor because the Zalman bracket and clip may not be compatible for him to use.

    Thank you all.

There's a thing I don't understand. I have now the Zalman and Prescott on a Gigabyte GA-8I945P-G. I'm going to put the Q6600 in a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R. Both motherboards have socket 775.

Do I have to buy something special (bracket and clip) to fix the Zalman CNPS7700 to the GA-EP35-DS3R?

    EDIT:
I take it your Prescott is a socket 775 then perhaps you wouldn't need the bracket and clip. If the Prescott cpu you have is a 478 socket then you probably would need the bracket and clip. It would be helpful if you posted the Prescott cpu that you have.

I suggested you check your motherboard because I tried to use a Zalman 7000 on my Gigabyte P35-DS3L mobo and the capacitors were in the way. Therefore the Zalman bracket and clip could not be used. I had to buy another cpu heatsink fan.

Yes, my Prescott is a socket 775.

I'm afraid I'll only know if my Zalman fits in the new motherboard when I dismount it and try to mount it in the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R.

Althoug I thought that if it's now on a GA-8I945P-G 775, it should also fit on the new GA-8I945P-G, because both of them have the same socket 775. I don't know if new motherboards have something special that could affect the mounting.
