So anybody here do this for fun?

I'll mess around sometimes trying to find web or ftp servers, and see what they got.

in the USA , this is considered not legal and in the category as terrorism (really) ...

it is also (at the least) a good way to get reported to your isp ....

  4. Been pinging servers forever....

Back before Veronica, Finger and Gopher I used to use a "war game dialer" to try and find machines with modem lines just 'a waitin' to be hit.

I remember I would just say dial xxx-xxx-1000 to xxx-xxx-9999 and just let it go.

Those were the days... 286's, Epson Dot Matrix and Dr DOS.

You WOULDN'T hear from your ISP. NSA or Department of Homeland Security would hear from your ISP. Then, if they see reason to pursue it, you'll be notified; most likely by the US Department of Justice. Yes, it is a load of shit though.

I dont think its illegal just to ping , or check for open ports. I think its if you act on that, then....the shit could hit the fan
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0

some more info -- above ....

in it's self -- scanning in not illegal , but some types of it are .. it is a grey area (for example = google is scanning all the time) ... the problem is that the patriot act says you can not connect to another computer without their consent, so if you scan for lets say ; ftp sites , you have to connect to that site to see if it anon .. it is a real mess , but overall most ISP will drop you if you are reported as scanning and all GOV systems are now required to report scans to your isp .. as well as many other institutions.

ISP 's have different policies and how many warning you will get (or none) .

if you read your user agreement - many will have this clause or one like it:

You are prohibited from violating or attempting to violate the security of any server or system or network , including, without limitation, (a) accessing data not intended for such user or logging into a server or account which the user is not authorized to access, (b) attempting to probe, scan or test the vulnerability of a system or network or to breach security or authentication measures without proper authorization, (c) attempting to interfere with service to any user, host or network, including, without limitation, via means of submitting a virus to the Site, overloading, “flooding,” “spamming,” “mailbombing” or “crashing,” (d) sending unsolicited e-mail, including promotions and/or advertising of products or services, or (e) forging any TCP/IP packet header or any part of the header information in any e-mail or newsgroup posting. Violations of system or network security may result in civil or criminal liability. YOUR ISP will investigate occurrences which may involve such violations and may involve, and cooperate with, law enforcement authorities in prosecuting users who are involved in such violations.

You realize that just as any other idiot who is willing to inconvenience many for their own tiny gain you deserve prision time. I for one wouldn't blink at turning the key to deprive you of your freedom for several years for being such an idiot, just as I would also do gladly for any other spammer. Heck it's unfortunate that this admission won't get the police to come over and fire a couple rounds into your ass and simply be done with it for only $5 of taxpayers expense.

And I'm one of the more non-violent people you'd find too. You simply deserve a high level of punishment for your chosen form of idiocy, assuming you likely don't actually have a heavy mental defect. Break your ass for choosing to annoy a large number of the better people. Pretty equivalent justice.

Wardialer types were the dumbasses of 80's and 90's era hackers, not the smart ones. It is nothing to be proud of.

And save the freedom BS comback. Along with freedom comes the responsibility to not use your own to infringe other people's freedom. What you think was cute is just as un-American as every other spammer or telemarketer.
