  1. my laptop recently went out , power failure i assume. anyways instead of repairing i decided that i may better off getting a desktop, especially since my laptop spent most of its time as one. well, i was wondering if i could take the dvd burner from the laptop and use it as a external burner. my question is are there any enclosure kits for optical drives?

    thanks for any repsonses

Most enclosures I know of fit standard desktop 5 inch drives. There are probably enclosures that fit laptop drives as well but they may be more expensive making it more prudent to buy a new desktop burner considering how cheap and fast they have gotten.

  5. true, i just feel bad deserting the burner, i've only had the laptop for a year so i was hoping i could salvage more than just the hdd. i'm keeping my options open whether to repair the laptop or purchase the desktop with/without a dvd burner.

    thanks

Sell the burner!!! This way, it is win-win. You get to buy a nice new DL 12x burner. And some guy with a laptop can burn DVDRs at 4x while eating a piece of pie at Starbucks.
