  1. I want to buy DVD blank media to burn some DVD movies. I can get DVD+R's a bit cheaper than DVD-R's. Is it worth paying a bit more for DVD-R'? Do they offer wider compatibility or any other "extra" feature?
    Thanks.
(my DVD burner is compatible with both)

Is your standalone DVD Player compatible with both. buy the one which your DVD player is compatible with.

My DVD Player is compatible with both DVD+R and DVD-R, so i just buy the DVDR i can find the best deal with.

As far as i am aware, there is no major difference between the two. the DVD-R can usually sqeeze a few MB more than DVD+R. I have no preference over either. I just buy the cheapest. i am currently using Ritek GO4 4X DVD-R, only cost under 40p each from www.blankdiscshop.com

    Hello,
Yes, dvd-r are supposed to be more compatible. Though, so far I personally haven't noticed much diffence (in "playability" that is).

EDIT --- I can burn both types and like the other member posted I buy the cheapest type I can find. To date I haven't had problems that I can tell

  5. I would check around on some of the forums and see which media people have had luck with. I have read some older comments saying that Sony has problem writing to less expensive media

    http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7076&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=25

but these are old comments and newer firmware updates may have solved the problem.
Still a few bugs in the system...

Thats correct. I have a Sony dru-500a writer, it has a problem writing to cheap media, usually resulting in burn process failing

There are problems even with quality media such as the RitekGO4, the burner will only burn at 2X max for 4X rated discs . You need a miracle to get 4X burn for the sony writer.

Ive even updated to the latest firmware, this has not solved the problem.

  7. What about the GreatAZO 4X DVD+R at 28c each? They claim 4X compatibility with the Sony DRU500A

What about the Princo 4X for 34c?

I've been recording cheap DVD-R's with the DRU500A at 1X and never had any trouble. (ProMedia)

Thanks alegator fot that info. However, the prices are in dollars, i am in the UK, not much use to me.

Im not too sure about the princo, ive heard some bad reviews about them on this forum. However, i did find the TDK DVD+R will burn at 4X on my sony dru-500a.

  9. Some older machines have better success with -R's (my 5 yo Sony is a perfect example)... it would only play -R's.

I've never seen a player to reject DVD-R. I often see DVD+R rejects.
