If it is a regular Video DVD, rip it to HDD with DVDDecrypter. Then use VOB2MPG to get the mpg file.
But my initial question remains: How, using what, did you create your DVD?

As Mats said, Rip it to HDD with DVDDecrypter. Then use VOB2MPG to get the mpg file.

Have you installed these two programs yet?

Do you have the Microsoft .NET 2 framework installed on your system? VOB2MPG requires it to run.

ok we are up and running on vob2mpeg but now we have another hitch . When i convert it appears to do two of the first chapters out of 30 that there is . When i copied each chapter form VHS r paused some clips then carried on and i also stopped recording for another day so wether that is the problem i dont know .Do i copy another DVD-R from the original and so have one complete recording , or do i transfer back to vhs and then copy again ,with i reckon a loss in qualty. if i do copy a duplicate disc do i use shrink or imgburn as you suggested
or is there a better way that you can advise
    thanks for your patience
