There are some old videotapes that I want to make DVDs out of..only for myself, really. But when I try to capture them on my Sony Computer it says it can't copy because the tape is copy protected. Is there any way to get around this? Are all capture cards like this?

You need a macro buster device ($100).
The copyprotection is called Macrovision. I purchased a small hardware device called a Macrobuster from a company oi cannot remember. It works great, but it IS $100!!
OUCH
There is no other way around this...sorry. -
Well it really depends on what you are using for capture. My Matrox Marvel G400-TV couldn't capture macrovision tapes until I got a patch for the video capture driver which eliminates macrovision detection. This allows me to finally capture all of the tapes which really look bad and stutter and jump around. Works great. I also heard that there was something similar for ATI cards, but the classic ones. Either way, if you are lucky to have one of the cards you can patch up, then by all means don't spend one hundred bucks on something you don't have to get.

Actually, some are $30, but not as fancy (they consist of a board, two RCA jacks and a plastic box). Usually run on a 9V battery, or AC adaptor. Bascially just works, with no added features. I had one, worked fine...
