  1. Hi,

I used the Sefy guide to back up my DVD's to MPG2, for play back on my HTPC. The process invovled is - DVDDecrypter, DVD2AVI, TMPGenc 2.5 (DVD NTSC Template).

Quite a few of them have this weird thing that happens on playback, it will skip ahead about 30secs or so. It's also consitantly reproduceable. I have PowerDVD 5.0 installed for the DVD codec. I've tried playing it back in PowerDVD and it has the same problem. If I burn it to DVD then the problem doesn't occur (as far as I can tell)

    Has anyone else experienced this???

    Thanks,
    Steve

  3. Because I have 800GB of storage and I'd like to not lose any quallity, so I can burn them to DVD if I want later on.

Uhh... so why not just rip the VOBs to your hard drive?

    Let me get this straight.

You are ripping to your hard disk (you could just stop here, maintain perfect quality, and easily play back using common playback software!!!).

Then you are running it through DVD2AVI (presumably to get the VOBs into some more manageable kind of file, perhaps m2v and wav).

Then you are re-encoding it to an MPG2 system stream with TMPGEnc.

Does that about sum it up?

The problem is probably in the DVD2AVI phase. Although we can't completely rule out TMPGEnc it is pretty reliable.

What I'm failing to understand is why you even bother fiddling with it AT ALL?

  5. Yes that sums it up. Well the reason is because I'd like to have them in .mpg file format. Basically I've got a HTPC loaded with SnapStream that serves video files. It doesn't work with the raw video files, only .wmv, mpg, avi, etc.

  6. It would be great if a vendor would provide a solution to view the ripped dvd files as is. I'm not aware of any right now. I do know you can view the ripped files with PowerDVD.

I just have this GRAND idea of just pointing and clicking the remote from my humble couch position!

  7. I Have a small suggestion for you then, if you use TMPGEnc 3 or TMPGEnc DVD Author in a combination with AnyDVD, you can copy the movie itself directly to an MPG file, instead of encoding. it will simply do a VOB to MPG conversion with no quality or encoding involved.
