    Which is actually the best way to go from DVD to VCD and DVD to AVI. Quality is important.
    Yes i know there is a lot of guides, but they just tell you how to do it different ways not the best way. I would like to have a vcd including subs.

    To say what is the best might be a very subjective opinion.
    Here is mine:
    smartripper>dvd2avi>Avisynth(vobsub plugin for subs)>TMPGEnc
    If you want SVCD, CCE as encoder might be better.
    Audio: Azid>SSRC>tooLAME.

    Well, you have to learn, how to work with that tools and how to optimize the encoding process (use some filters, cut all borders accurately, add vertical borders[TV overscan], accept, that it takes loooong).
