Hi,
I'd like to convert some old music videos that I have on VHS to DVD.
I capture at 720*576 or 352*576.
The problem with analog capture is that noise is quite high (and even more when old music videos are converted).
So I'm looking for filters (preferably fast) for avisynth or virtualdub that can reduce noise. What's the best: spatial soften, temporal soften, spatio-temporal or simple noise reduction ?
PS: I can't use these filters: Convolution3D, PeachSmoother, STMedianFilter, Deen
Thanks.

I've had very good results with the flaXen VHS Noise Reduction Filter for VirtualDub. Check the VirtualDub website. There should be a link to the filter somewhere.

I've used practically every filter there is to clean up noisy video, but I still find Virtualdub's built-in noise reduction the best when capturing video and I can use it in real time as I capture.

I think this is the original 2d cleaner

I've had pretty good results in VirtualDub with a temporal smoother (for jitters and rapid snow - improves quality between frames) and the smart-smoother for the slower snow (to increase quality within the frame). TMPGenc doesn't seem to give the same quality results, and has more limited filter selection.
The most important thing is not to overdo it... you can get rid of all noise by blurring it so much that people look like blobs, but that's not really an improvement. Remember that some of the noise is more evident on the PC than the TV - so if you filter the hell out of it it might look TOO processed on the TV. Make sure you test on the TV as you go. -
Hi cd090580,
Are you able to post a couple of sample pic's of your noise ??
That would help us out even more.
* Are the noise, random noise.., like "." dots for instance ?
* Are you refering to Lines running through your video
* Are you refering to distoration lines at the bottom of your capture
* etc.
Just trying to help, if I can
Thanks,
