  1. I have two AVI files that I want to put on DVD-RW... What format should I convert them to and how should I go about combining them into one?

You could convert to DVD MPEG2 with TMPGEnc, and use same to "merge" the resulting MPEGs...(though IMO it'd be easier to import each resulting MPEG into your authoring program as separate "movies" or assets...)

are you wanting to watch on your standalone DVD player? or your computer?

  3. i want to watch them on my standalone dvd player... ok so when i am going to convert them with tmpgenc, it wouldnt recognize the audio source for some reason... should i do audio and video separate? also should interlacing be on and the resolution at 16:9 or 4:3?

    try this:

From the "TMPGEnc Problems and Tips" sticky...

If you get Audio errors, Audio out of sync problems or No Audio at all
Try to convert the audio to WAV audio before converting and use the WAV as audio source. (TMPGEnc can't handle VBR MP3 and AC3 that well)

    Use this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubaudio.htm

load your original files in VirtualDub, and extract the audio as a wav...then load the wav as your audio source...
