I've installed the mpeg-2 playback component as well as the Ac3 codec provided for playback of Divx components with .ac3 files in the Quicktime library. But my m2v files muxed with .ac3 files into an mpeg-2 will not play with sound in Quicktime. Is the Ac3 codec only for DivX files with .ac3 playback? I guess it may be, hah? Since my files are not playing back with sound. But is there any other way other than maybe getting Quicktime pro to get .ac3 playability in Quicktime player?

Thank you for any clues you could offer,
    peace,

    Your guess is correct.

If you want to play muxed MPEG2 files in QuickTime, you should convert the Ac3 stream to an audio format QuickTime prefers. I use MPEG-4 audio.

Regarding mp4 audio, how can I convert and .mp2 to that format? Which application might you suggest for this possible conversion, if you don't mind?

    2. I also want to be able to be able to convert the mpeg-2 to a dvd using sizzle 0.1 (no other version works for me), but i don't think sizzle will accept the .mp4, though of course it will the .ac3. So i guess i may end up having to choose between having a file that will play with sound (if and when i am able to convert either the .ac3 or the original .mp2 to .mp4) in Quicktime, or having a dvd (made via sizzle) whose muxed mpeg (or its vob i guess) will not play in Quicktime.

i just installed apple's mpeg-2 playback component, but i guess my new found gleee at being able play mpeg-2 files in it sooner or later was bound to end in disapointment as Apple is a capitalist machine and wants to be paid for every little venture into its territory.

    thanks for the earlier repost.

If your muxed MPEG2 file has mp2 audio, I would NOT convert the audio to MPEG4 audio, the quality difference is not worth the time. If your file is already muxed with mp2 audio, this should play in QuickTime just fine.

You want one file to serve two different purposes, and QuickTime will not work for you in your case. Use VLC. VLC will play MPEG2video muxed with AC3 audio. If you feel you'd still like to go the QuickTime route, you'll simply need to have two copies of your file: one to make a DVD in Sizzle, and another with audio friendly to QT for playback in QuickTime.

Now, now... Apple is very clear in what the component is designed for ... It only promises to enable MPEG2 video to play back in QuickTime ... It's not an audio filter. If you want to play back files with AC3 sound, you have an alternative (VLC).[/img]
