  1. When you transfer video via a firewire it has a bitrate of about 3.5mb/sec. The DVD template in TMPG has a default bitrate of 7. Does it make any sense to encode from avi to mpg using a higher bitrate than the original avi? Or is that just wasting space?

  2. The data rate you see for the firewire transfer is exactly that - a data transfer rate. It has no bearing on the playback bitrate of the video. If the video bitrate is higher than 3.5MB/s, it just means that it will take longer than the length of the video to transfer it - slower than realtime.

In any case, 3.5MB/s is much higher than any typical MPEG bitrate, which is most often measured in megabits per second (Mbps), not megabytes per second (MB/s). (Different by a factor of 8 ).
